On uiyrottirn to Honolulu in December, 1818, after n ntny in Cnlifornin of nearly n yenr, the iirinciiml chnnye 1 noled wns the nhseiicf of ninny fnniilinr fnces. This m irticuliirly notable in n small com munity like ours, where nt that, time overy lly knew everybody else. The gold fever , hnd irevniled extensively all over the Island, but particularly in the capital, i and about every man who could get iiwny hnd either gone or wns preparing to go. ! The law then required that omt.v one ; going away from llio country as a passen ger must advertise liw intention m to do, for three weekH in tho government news paper. There had been one hundred and twenty-live Mich publications in tho l'tilynuhtn to December 1st, and many moro hnd got away either by shipping as seamen or "stowing avay." The lover of emigration to California increased in tho following year, so that Honolulu by July, 18-1'Jj was comparatively deserted of foreigners, and a good many natives also went. Every vessel doparting for San Francisco was crowded with passengers during in the first six months of that year, and there were several instances of parties undertaking the voyage in decked wlmlo botits nndothor small craft. Some of theso arrived over safely, after great hardships, and some were compelled to return td port. The year 1518 also saw tho introduction of three diseases from abroad the measles, inlluonza and whooping cough, which it was estimated carried oil' in two years about twelve thousand, or one eighth of tho nntivo population. In October, 18-18, died the young chiefs "Wil liam Pitt Leleiohoku (son of Kalaimoku, tho Premier under Knahuiunuu, and hus band of Her Highness Keelikolani) and Mose.sKokuuiwn, Json of Gov. Kekuauaoa imd Kinnu) and laiminaauaot a ward of Queen Kalama. Kauikeaouli and his Queen were both sick with the measles, and narrowly escaped death. Both the young chiefs Moses and Leleiohoku were inclined to be "fast."' Tho former was in tended by tho King for tho position of Goernor of Kauai, had he lived; and tho latter by his rank as u high chief was said to hnve been looked upon by Kekuanaon with jealousy, as a sort of rival to his own eons, ,Mo.es, Lot and Alexander. Honolulu experienced a sensation on tho liith of October, 1S18, on tho arrival of tho British schooner Amelia, with a talo of mutiny and murder. She had left Mazathm early in September for China, her principal hiding being tho sum of $UOO,000 in specie. Her Captain was named McXnlly, and she had as passengers a Mr. Cook and wifo and a female servant. Tho most of the crow wore Mexicans. On tho 3rd of October, at night, three of the crow (Moxicans) attacked nnd killed tho second otlicer, and the Captain and Mr. Cook going on deck to ascertain tho cause of tho noiso made by tho murderers, wore staulnd nnd thrown overboard. Tho first officer was served the same way. Tho rest of tho ship's company submitted to the mutinoi rs without a struggle, nnd thoy nt once toi k possession of tho money, which thoy div tied. Thoy found Rome baskets of wine, and proceeded to feast and enrouso jii tho cabin, forcing tho unfor tunnto wi men to sit at the table with thein. Mi antime Foveral of tho crow con spired to rctnko tho vessel, tho two most nctio in tho enterpriso being mere lads, John Smith, a native of Rotterdam, and Thomas Or nnon, of London. Tho others with them were Thomas McDonald, an American, ai d Win. Peterson, a Norwegi an. They watched their opportunity nt night, October -1th, when two of tho mur derers wero asleep on deck and tho third keeping watch, and attacked them with an ax and the pump-brakes. Tho sleeping ones nover knew what hurt them, ami tho other they threw overboard after a short, sharp struggle. Boing now in possession of the vessel, they tried to get back to tho Coast, but tho wind being strong and un faorable, they ran before it for tho near est land, which was theso Islands. Gan non and McDonald wero tho only ones that knew anything about navigation, nnd John Smith took the command. They cnnio to oft" Honolulu on tho 12th without nccidont. Tho money was all recovered, and was stored in tho Custom House, by Consul-Gonoral Miller. The lads, Smith nnd Gannon, were looked upon as heroes by our community; nnd bo they wero, posseting in huge degree that quality that always goes with truo bravery modesty. Tho AiHtliii was refitted here, and sailed in a month after her arrival for Hongkong, in command of Capt. Thomas Lindsay, who died there. In the- summer of 1818 commenced n series of complications between the Hnw iiiinn Government and the resident for eign diplomatic agents -particularly that ot rranco wnicn cumuiuueu in uio Pionch invasion of August, 18-1!). William Patrice Dillon, the Ironch Representa tive, was, as his name would indicate, of Irish parentage, though born and edu cated in Franco. Ho claimed to be n thor ough diplomatist; and if a love of contro versy and hot water nru the necessary con comitants of a diplomat, then ho assuredly was one. He fuueied that Dr, Judd, the acknowledged head of tho Government, was grown jealous of Mr. AVyllie, whom the Doctor had made Minister of Foreign Affairs; and having himself r morbid nntionnl jealousy of English inlluence, which ho considered persouilied in Wyllio, he undertook to junto a breach between the two -Judd and Wyllio. He wrote a cunningly worded letter to Uio former in August, 1818, in which wero disparaging remarks respecting Wyllie, with whom, howovor, tho writer continued apparently ou good terms, lu this letter ho hinted that Mr. Wyllio wits intriguing to destroy Dr. Judd's iutluenco in tho government, nnd to upsut the prestige of Aniericuus with tho King; and ho suggested that it would bo better to get Mr. Wyllie out of office on the principle, " When the duvil attempts to kill you, Iw Iwfoniluind with him, nnd kill tho devil it you can." Hut the wily diplomat mistook his innu, for Dr. Judd promptly laid the letter Iwforo the Privy Council, and it ot courso fell into tho hands ot Mr. Wyllio, who was not unturnllv pleased with such portions as tl.tcn. ". f- Wvlli.. is intriizuiui? willi other persons to doatroy tho imlopoudonco ot tho Islands nnd tuako thorn over to England." " Mr. Judd call take charge of tho Foreign Department j Mr. Paty should be made Minister of Finance; Mr. Bates, should be Undor-SecroUiry o( 1'oroign delations; and Mr. Judd nud Mr. Dillon between them, could select a now Col-lector-Generul." &c, &c Tho ill-will bo- VOLTLMU Tl., NO. 18.1 HONOLULU, H. Iweon Mr. Wyllio and the French official wns thenceforth vigorously cultivated in innumerable dispatches until each beenmo irritated to the utmost. Menntime Mr. Ten Eyck, tho U. S. Com missioner, hnving at the outset of his official career made an unfaornble im pression on the Ministry by his active nnd zealous support of the claims of Ladd fc Co. against the government, took no pains to conceal the feelings of contempt which he evidently entertained for the King's advisers. A blunder committed bv tho Ministry nlout this time, (the fall of 1818) in sending Theodore Shillnbor to Califor nia ns H.M.'s Special Commissioner, to endeavor to effect with Gen. Mason (tho Military Governor) "a provisional ar rangement on tho basis of n perfect recip rocity of ilags and import duties," thus apparently ignoring tho Commissioner hero holjed still more to widen the breach. Mr. Ten Eyck resented what ho considered amounted to nn insult to him self; and Mr. Wyllio declared that tho proposed "arrangement" wns stipulated to bo ''subject to conceit with the U.S. Commissioner nnd approval of the Amer ican Government," and that no slight or offense was intended. Mr. Ton Eyck re torted that ho would not do tho "King's Government tho injustice to suppose them ignorant of the fact that a Military Gov ernor ot California had no authority to make n commercial treaty with a foreign power, while he, tho Commissioner, was clothed with full ixiwers in that regard. But tho whole thing came to naught, ex cept that ilgao Shillnbor a semi-official status and nn opportunity to spend some of this Government's money in San Fran cisco, and helped to widen "the brench be tween the Commissioner nnd the Ministry. Tho " Sandwich Islands News," which after tho closo of tho first volume was dis continued for a time, was ro-issued in 18-18 by E. A. Rockwell, a strolling printer who had como here in a whaleship. Ho was a fnir paragraphist, but tho most of Urn editorials wero written by foreign residents, who, for various reasons, wero opposed to the Ministry. The new vo lume, which continued until April, 18-10, was printed in a thatched building ou Fort Stieet, whero tho "Enterpriso Mill " now stands. Tho lenders of the opposi tion during the first year of the "News" Abell and Brinsmnde both left for Cali fornia, but tho succeeding writers for tho paper kept up the attacks on the Min istry with unabated bitterness nnd persis tency. The use in editorial articles in tho "News" of some peculiar turns of expres sion in tho discussion of questions upon which tho Government and foreign repre sentatives (Dillon, Miller and Ten Eyck) wero at variance, aroused tho suspicion that tho latter wero in tho prnctico of themselves contributing to tho paper. In order to prove tho justice or otherwise of this susmcion on the principlo porhaps that had been suggested by Dillon, nbout dealing with tho dovil -the mistako or rather blunder wns committed by tho Government of surreptitiously gotting possession of a lot of manuscripts from the office of tho "Xows." Theso wero ab stracted by James Peacock, a printer em ployed on the paper, tho bribe being tho sum of 300, and tho go-between one Rogors, tho Customs Guard. Tho fact that these manuscripts wore in tho posses sion of tho government, nud tho modo in winch they lind been obtained, wns soon noised abroad, and created a great excite ment in this little community. There wero nbout n dozen different papers editorials, communications, and correspondence from California, in different hands, but several of tho most objectionable iu touo to tho Government were in the undisputed handwriting of the American Commission er, Mr. Ten Eyck.
