On tho 'J9th of .Inly, died Levi Cham berlain, for twenty-seven years the Secular Superintendent of the Sandwich Islands Mission, under the A. U. C. F. M. of Boston, nged 58 years. He left n widow and a largo family of children. A native of Dover, Vt., ho entered the mcrcantilo pro fession in Boston, nt an early age, and sub sequently studied nt Andover Theological Somiuary nith n view to entering tbo Ministry. Ho a employed for some time nt the -Mission Rooms, in Boston, where, under tbo iniluenco of the distinguished 'Christian philanthropist, Jeremiah Kvarts, (father of NV. M. Kvarts, laic Secretary of State of the U. Mr. Chamberlain was n most eflicicnt, laborious nnd feelf-deTiyitig'maif. Atthe date of his death, tbo late Hev. E. V. Clark thus wrote of him: " To his judiciouuand econ omical management of the property com mitted to his trust, is to be attributed in a large measure, the efficient and successful operations of this mission." On the lJith of August nrrived the French frigato J'omvitivunte, Admiral do Tromelin, and on tho day fullowing tho French war steamer Gussemti, Commau der Fancon. Here, now, was Mr. Dillon's opportunity to "get even" with Mr. W'yllic, fur all tho"',grievauces" which tho former had suffered at tho bauds of the latter during socossivc years. The causes of complaint were legion, as gathered from 2dr. Dillon's dispatches, which Mr. Wyllie bad published, as he claimed he had a right to do. Admiral de Tromelin took up his quarters on shore, nt tho residenco of Mr. Dillon, and of course become thoroughly imbued with that gentleman's sentiments towards the Hawaiinn government, nud its Minister of Foreign Relations particularly, mid quite prepared to act in nccordau:o with whatover "La Chevalier" Dillon might fcUggCSt. The official demands and charges mndo by the French Consul, may bo summarised ns follows: Demands For tho repeal of uuudry laws of the Hawniian Iingdom; for the return of all dutic3 levied on spirits since tho 6th of April, lS-io", beyond what arbitrators might pronounce to bo fnir and equitable; for a pecuniary indemnity to tho French ship Gen. And iiitermingleil with these woro sketches of Mr. Wjllie's biography, from Haielbank in Scotland, to Honolulu. Wo tuny imagine the changes rung on nil those topics by Mr. Dillon to tho Admiral, dur ing tho week whiuh elapsed between the IntlcrV arrival and tho ilnto of the first formal demnml on the Hawniinu govern ment. This was dated " Admiral's Frigato of tho French .Republic, Jai Paunnivaiitc, off Honolulu, August 20, IS U," and signed by Dillon and Lcgdnr.int de Tromelin. It asked the Mimtter of Foreign Affairs to make known to (ho signers thereof " thu day mid hour when His Majesty will bo pleased to admit them and to listeu to them" "to discuss wilh the King iu his Council grave questions nctunlly pending bctwt.cn France mid the .Hawaiian Islands." To this demniid for an audience to "discuss wilh tho King iu his Council," Mr. Wyllie very properly replied by declining to grant tho rtquest, and informing Mr. Dillon that nil matters pending between Iho Hawaiian Government unci tho Republic of Franco had hi en referred to the direct considera tion of the Department of Foreign Affairs in France. Adding that if, however, Ad miral de Tromelin nud Mr. Dillon wero of opinion that there wero niiy mntters not so referred and then pending, it wonld much please His Majesty if they would specify them, that ho might be apprized of tho ex tent and nnturo thercuf, and thorcby bo prepared to take them into immedinta con sideration. The intention was to fix n day for tho desired audience, so soon as tho Admiral nud Consul should havo complied with this request, but avoiding always a discussion with the King direct in Council, which they had proposed, and which tho Hawaiian Constitution did not allow. On the 'Jilt, tho LT. S. sloop of war J'nlile, 10 guns, Commander James Glynn, arrived from Hongkong. She had a laigo number of her crew down with dysentery, having lost twenty-one. Sbo enmo into port and landed her sick, a building near tho Fort beiug set apart for a temporary hospitnl for their accommodation. Tho Pnbie called in at Nagasaki, Japan, in the courso of her voyage, and whilo slnnding into the bay, several documents were thrown on board, secured to a bamboo by being thrust into n split in tho cud, and thrown on board from a bjat, bamboo and all. These documents were in English, .translated from Japanese by ,Jhe Dutch Superintendent of Trade. They purported to ho "by the express older of the Gover nor of Nagasaki," nud consisted of: Direc tions where to anchor, and to remain thero until further orders; various questions ns to uamo of vessol, tonnage, number of crew, wheuce from nud when to depart; and orders that during the btay in Japancso waters, no one should leavo the vessel, no gnus should be fired, and the ship's com pany must behave civilly and respectfully towards Japaucsc officials. It was added at the bottom of each document "Very disagreeable consequences might resnlt in caso this order should not be strictly observed." Japan was then a terra iiicoy. nitci to all nations but tho Dutch what a vast change has como over thorn as to foroigu intercourse, since tho treaty nego tiated by Commodore Perry and signed in 1854. Capt. Glynn, of tho J'reble, was an iras ciblo little mau, n naval-officer of the old fashioned sort, and his rirrival on tho cvo of tho French invasion was bomewat oppor tune. Ono of his Lieutonants was Albert G. Clary, sinco here in command of the U. S. S. Jiemciu, nud tho Captain's Clerk was Fred L.
