the islands for the last season nt Soo tons,
which, with the s)iup and molasses, is valued

have often before remarked, are the wants nf

this diminution can be profitably supplied by

on Kauai, owned, by Dr. H. W. WimhI and
Mr. llurbank, will nmount to 300 tonsofbeau

makes the handsome Mini of $36,000. Its
sjrup and molasses I estimate at $10,000
more, which showsatot.il nf $46,000.' The
whole expenses of the plantation-per annum do
not exceed, I nm told, $15,000. Comment is
unnecessary,
"The l.lhue plantation, owned by Henry A.
IViice & Co., only ten miles distance' from
that of Koloa, has been less favored. Owing
to causes whiili no human agency could avert,
the large crop anticip.iteil has proved an almost
entile failure. A jear ago last December, the
prospects nt I.iluie were cheering in the highest
degree, and we were sure that we should liar

The suit never shown on finer fields of cane.

"Since our last meeting, we have Imported

which, in nddilioii to the louianccsand (Midi!,
the following are most worthy of perusal 1
"Among the Sabine Mills," a series of Italian

The Catifonian for October take, as its sub
title the old name nf Overland Monthly whicli
it is intended to run in the same number for
the next two months when the present name
of the magazine will be replaced by the latter.
The opening article of the present number is
"The Doctrines of Italph Waldo Emerson,"
and will be interesting to the many admirers
of the late sage of Concord. "The Japanese
llonze'.s story" and " Iteinlnisccnces of the
Gold Feriod" is the class of literature that is
always welcome as a kind of relish, "Civil
ization in South America" gives the reader a
goixl idea of life in some of the South Ameri
ca n States. " Wcndish Customs anil Supersti
tions" is n collection of queer tales aliout a
queer people. "Is Color lllindncsa Survival?"
is a contribution from the pen of Dr. I. Fori
toppidan, who spent some months in these
islands, and who gives in this article, the re
sult of his investigations among the native Ma
waiians. "The Vigilantesof Montana" is one
of those peculiarly weslern sketches which
havcalxnit them a charm of their own. "Among
the llasques," a strange people of northern
Spain, is continued. Other contributions, va
ried in character, make, the numlier an excel
lent one.
The Octolier number of Ilarfii't Monthly
has seldom been excelled. It contains a great
variety of reading matter, and many very in
structive articles. The llhistiated afTicle en
titled " In Surry" is continued. "Medical
IMiicilion in New Yoik"will find a nuniln-r
of interested readers. Certain New York
Houses" gives a good 'description nf the art
decoration of several well known houses ((
the " great metropolis, A skilclt of Dante
Gabriel Kosclti is acconiianicd by a Kttrait
of the noted poet and painter. "Southern
California," piofuscly illustrated, gives a good
description of poitions of the golden state,
patticulaily Montciey. "The Stuimh Discov
tiies"is an excellent historical contribution
and will be found very entertaining. "Sviiunes
and his Theory," is a description of the pecii.
lun views of Captain S) mines regarding the
formation of the c.iith, claiming that it Is hol
low and may be entered at ihe poles. "The
Railway Invasion of Mexico" gives a good idea
of the inpid industrial progress that is now lie
ing made in the land of the Monteiumas.
There are also several other articles, which,
with the serials and editorial departments,
make a most valuable number.
