July 17th, 1854, Honolulu was suddenly thrown into a state of excitement by the advent of the combined English and French squadron of war ships on the expedition to I'etropauUU, which subsequently turned out so unfortunately. Wc had no telephones nor marine telegraph in those days. First, was the announcement of a steamer off Diamond Head, coming along slowly and seemingly in no hurry to reach the harlmr. The numerous "lookouts" in town were occupied with gazers, who speculated on the character of the stranger. Dut while the guesses were being made, here came a frigate off the point, then another and another, until ten stately vessels under sail besides the steamer a splendid as well as novel sight were seen bearing down towards the anchor age. The llritish and French Hags were inter' mingled. Ily 2 o'clock all were anchored in line off the harbor, and were reported as fol lows: English frigate President, HcarAdmi ral Davis l'rice ; frigate Amfhitrite, Capt, Stamibrth ; steamer Virago, Commander Mar shal. French frigate La Force, Kcar Admi ral des I'ointes ; frigate L'Euriiiice, Capt. Lagrandierc ; conctlc VArttmise, Capt. L' Encquc; brig L'OMigaido,-Capl. de Hose nat. In all, these ships carried 2(8 guns. The liritsih frigate Piine, Capt. Sir F. Nicholson, 40 guns, arrived on the 22d, making in all 258 guns. The two Admirals with their suites were presented to the King on the 2 1st, and the next day, by invitation of Admiral l'rice, the King and Queen, l'rinces Liholilio, and Kamchameha, Princess Victoria, the Min isters, Privy Councillors and members of the Legislature, made an excursion on the war seamcr Virago though the squadron anchored outside. As the Virago passed each ship the yards were manned and the Kiugwas saluted by both the Admiral's ships at the same moment, and again on returning from Diamond Head. A collation was served in the cabin of the steamer, and the company, among which was a number of lady and gentlemen residents, had a most agreeable time. On the 25th, after a stay of eight days, during which they scry much enlivened our dull summer season, the squadron weighed anchor at 10 o'clock and stood off to the westward, destination unknown at that time. On the 21st of July, arrived from San Fran cisco (9 day. passage), the new elegant pro peller Polynesian, Rogers, master. She came, as was declared by her agent, to regularly engage in aline between Honolulu and San Francisco, for which purpose she was built. But she never made a second Jttlp, her owners ha ing apparently found a more remunerative rodte to South America. Some thirty thou sand dollars were subscribed here in this steamer company's stock. After she returned to the Coast it was stated that it had been found necessary to make sume alterations in her machinery, and the propeller Peytona was sent in her place in September. Hut the latter, also, made only a single trip, and one hoped for steam line to the Coast collapscdjfor the time. The real truth is, there was not business enough mailable then to support a steamer. I note that Dr. E. Hoffmann opened hU new drug store, in the Makee block, corner of Queen and Kaahumanu streets, on the 2 1st of July, 1854. It was by far the neatest and best appointed establishment of the kind in Hono lulu. The world-renowned vocalist, Kate I la) es, aimed at Honolulu, July 23d, en. route for Australia, In the bark fiiuujt Major, and delighted our citirens with a concert at the Court House. Of course the building was crammed to its utmost capacity, ' She sailed on the 24th for Sydney, having been the guet during her stay hereof Capt. and Mrs, James Makee, at their beautiful residence in Nuuinu valley. The 31st of July, the annUcrsary of the restoration of the Hawaiian flag and go em inent, was celebrated with the usual rejoicings and festivities. The event commemorated was then still fresh in the memories of many who were residents of the islands in 1S43, when that act of justice was done by Admiral Thomas, with a promptness and good will that wilt ever endear his memory to the people of these Islands. Among the occurrences of the day, was the presentation of a silk banner to Mechanic Engine Co. No. I, by the "daugh ter of Hawaii." Miss Elizabeth Maughan made the presentation, and Mr, W. R. Cuth licit received It, on behalf of the company. The troops were reviewed on the plains, by I'riuce Liholiho as Ueutcnint-Ccncral. There was as seroee t ttx paUcc in the evening, which everybody attended, and tiiaui were plentiful among the natives. August ltth, 1851, the community was shocked by the suicide of a well-known mer chant, F. J. I'ortcr, of the firm of I'orter & Ogdcn. He was an Englishman, well edu cated, but of a peculiarly saturnine disposition. He lived with a native woman named Abigail Mahcha, a near relative of the last King of Kauai, who had been educated at the Rojal School with the young l'rinces, but who had Income dissolute. I'ortcr had some quarrel with this woman, and he first shot her and then himself. He died immediately, but the woman recovered. On the 12th of August, after a session of over, four months, the Legislature was pro rogued, by the following significantly brief speech delivered by the Premier, the King not personally appearing : " Representatives of my people After a session of unprecedented length, I relieve you from further attendance in the Legislature. I hereby prorogue jou. "In the absence of adequate means to sup press insurrection, I must trust to Providence for the protection of my kingdom, and to your loyalty to recommend, both byword and deed, quiet subjection to law and order." The reference to "the absence of adequate, means," in connection with the military, was undoubtedly penned by Prince Llholiho, in view of the appropriation of only $30,000 " for the support of military, including flags and salutes." What may be termed the periodical annexa tion scare, came up in the Legislature during the month of August. A native member of the former House offered a resolution, setting forth that, whereas the New York femtJot June 5, 1854, had stated thafdispatches had been received at Washington from Mr. Gregg, U. S. Commissioner at I lonolulu, stating that the King had applied to him for immediate annexation to the United States, upon the ground of trouble with France and England; therefore the Minister of Foreign Relations be enquired of as to the truth of the report. On the same day in the House of Nobles, I'rince Liholilio made a similar enquiry of the Min ister, which brought forth a lengthy reply. Mr. V)llic emphatically declared that neither England nor France had given, or were giving, any trouble such as that which the N. Y. HtraldhaA asserted. At the same time "he was sorry to state his belief that, in the inter nal condition of the kingdonl and its mixed population, mere uul exist clangei. Under a strong government the danger would be nothings but here, where the King was left without an adequate physical force, the danger could not be overrated." Another hint for a military appropriation. In the same category of ridiculous state ments as to island affairs which American papers then frequently made and even now occasionally blunder into was an article in the Itoston Post, of June 17, 1854. The fol lowing is an extract : "Great liritain has everywhere active agents. Her Consul at Honolulu is very industriously endeavoring to destroy the public scntimcnt.of the Hawaiians in favor ol annexation to the United States, by representing to the people that if the suffer themselves to be annexed they will be made slaves 1 The French Consul also propagates the ' preposterous idea. We ought to resent these wicked slanders upon the United States, as well as shameful attempts to impose upon the caredulity of a simple and worthy people. Without advocating annexa tion, let us tell them that they have no better friends in the world than the people of the United States, and that our friendship for them is as much greater than that of any other nation as is the amount of our commerce with them over that of any other nation. Our only desire is to see Ibe Islands pros perous and happy, and if the inhabitants desire a connection with the United Stales, nothing can be more certain than that such a connection, instead of depriving them ol their freedom, will guarantee it, and bestow on them liberty and law and the abundant bless inqs that flow in the train of republicanism. No, men and women ofllawaiil you are too good to lx slaves, and too intelligent, wc trust, to be blinded by the acts and falsehoods of European monarchies?" 11. L. s. LAY A FALV77ATG PERSON DOWN. It is surprising how ever) body rustics at a fainting person anil strives to raise him up, and especially to keep his head erect. There must bo an instinctive apprehension that if a person scued with a fainting or other fit fall into a re cumbent position, death is more imminent. 1 must have driven a mile to-day while a lady fainting was held upright. I found her pulse less, white, and apparently dvjng, and I be lieve that if I had delayed ten minutes longer she would really have died. I laid her head dow n on a low cr level than her body, and im mediately color returned to her lips and cheeks, and she became conscious. To the excited group of friends I said : Alw a) s remember this fact, namely i Fainting Is caused by a want of blood in the brain j the heart ceases to act w ith sufficient force to send the usual amount of blood to the brain, and hence the person loses consciousness because the function of the brain ceases. Restore the blood to the brain, and Instantly the person recovers. Now, though the blood is propelled to all parts" of the body by the action of the heart, jet it is still under the inlluencc of the laws of gravitation. In the erect position the blood ascends to the, head against gravitation, and the supply to the brain is diminished, as compared with the recumbent position, the heart's pulsation Iwing equal. If, then, )ou place a person sitting whose heart has nearly ceased to beat, his brain will fail to receive blood, while if ou lay him down, with the head lower than the heart, blood will run Into the brain by the mere force of gravity; and in fainting, in sufficient quantity to restore consciousness Indeed, nature teaches us how to manage the fainting person, for they always fall, and frequently arc at once restored by the recumbent position into which they arc thrown, Medical turttal. i in. While one in three of the population of Iowa U of foreign birth, five out of nine voters voted for the constitutional amendment prohibiting the sale of Intoxicating liquor. If this measure has succeeded in tH.H state with so Urge a pro portion of its population foielgnlxnn, it is not to be presumed that it will fail on Account of that element In any other state, for hot one has so large a proportion as Iowa. A similar movement in other states would insure success In over two-thirds, and then at) amendment of the Constitution of the United States would become possible. And this is likely soon to occur, if a law defjing liquor Intents does not cease its present t)le of insolent dictation.
