To understand the length of the procession when the grand marshal at its head arrived at Fort street on llerctania, the last division was passing Fort street on King. It was forty minutes in passing one point and contained over Si000 lxrsoni. It was 3 o'clock r. M. when the troops fired three volleys, the coffin was deposited in the tomb, the minute guns and the tolling bells ceased; and so Jvamehameha III was carried to his rest. The day following theuncra, January I Ith, King Kamehamcha IV, accompanied by I'rinee Kamehamcha, Princess Victoria, Keoni Ana, Judge Lee and Chancellor and Chief Justice, the ministers and privy councillors, aniveJ at the Kauaiahao church at 12 o'clock noon. The building was densely crowded in every available part, and thousands were un able to obtain an entrance. The occasion was the formal induction of the King Into his posi tion as the heir and successor of Kamehamcha III, The ceremonies were as follows) Prayer liy the Rev. Mr, Clark, reading by Keoni Ana (the Premier) of the certificate of the late King's death, at a rjuaitcr before 12 M. on the Ijlh day of December, the duplicate of the last will and testament of the late King, dated and April, 1 853, appointing his adopted son, Liholiho, to be heir fed succeuor to the crown, and therein, after dev ising certain lands to the Queen, he gave, devised and bequeathed all the test and residue of his estate, of what soever kind and nature, to his adopted son, Liholiho. These documents having been read in Hawaiian and English, William U. Lve, Chancellor of the kingdom admluistci ed to the King first in Hawaiian ami then in English the oath of office as prescribed in Article 94 of the then Constitution. Thereupon the Kukiiw lepealcU the woids "R ola ia Mil t it Ah-i," (Go4 preserve the King) which were leecliocJ throughout the church with loud ac clamations, the royal standard was hoitto! and a salute was filed from the foil. The King then addressed the audience In finite at length amid great enthusiasm. Kainchauieha IV was a bom orator, of noble pretence, and had a ie maikablc command of Language both in his native tongue and in English. At the conclu ioa of his address to his countrymen, he suikc impromptu to the foicigiieii who were present in laig, numbers. It was taken down al the lime by Mr, C. 0. The Saturday Press Is in receipt of a cony of the " Life of Lucy C-. Thurston," presented uy .Mrs. .Mary Ucnfield. This volume of over three hundred pages is principally occupied in sketches of missionary life in these islands at observed by a lady. Having preserved copies of all the letters she had written during a long lite of missionary service, the selections in cluded in this book were mainly chosen there from by herself during the last j cars of her life. Landing first at Kailua, Hawaii, April 4, 1820, and spending the remainder of her life among the people she had come so far to work amongst, no one could understand better the trials, vexations and jovs of pioneer missionary life. The liook is not divided into chapters, nut Into "articles" of varying length and on various subjects. As the work is prepared much in the form of a private journal, it will he most interesting to those who knew Mrs. Thurston; but here and there, interwoven amongst the other material, will be found in cidents interesting to the general reader. The writer does not follow the beaten path of pre vious authors, but her volume will bean addition to the mass of interesting information published about these islands. The October number of the nutters' Monthly, a twenty-four page issue, contains a large amount of valuable information. The opening editorial on "Forestry" has manysug gestions on a most important subject which should receive attention from the government and planters. The other editorial articles are, "Labor," and "Sugar Cane in Kohala." In teresting communications are contributed on the following subjects; "Double and Triple tiled," byThos. J. nayscldcn; "The Cane Borer," by II. M. W.; "Clarifying Cane Juice," by W. C. Uixby; "Twenty Years Ex- pcticncc in Cane Growing," by Geo. V. Will fong. Several pages of items and selections, with the foregoing, make a valuable number. "Braxton Bar A Talc of Pioneer Years in California" is the title of a romance just issued from the press of Cailcton & Co., of New ork, for a copy of which we extend thanks to the author, Mr. R. M. Daggett, U. S. Minister Resident to Hawaii. This tale carries one back to the early days when the shining metal was first discovered in California ; it describes the parting from home of the adventurous joung Argonauts of '49; the toils and privat ions, the pains and pleasures, the disappoint ments and v ictorles, the ups and dow ns peculiar to early life in California. Although clothed in the garb of romance, many of the scenes must have been drawn from real life, so truth fully are they pictured to one familiar with the people and times described. Mr. Daggett excels in descriptive writing, and when illus trating the scenery of the West, whether beauti ful mountain view s or dreary stretches of prairie, it is with the finished touch of the poet. The cuts, however, with which the work is Illus trated, add nothing to its attractiveness. Not having read the book through, we can say nothing of the plot. But the reader will, find much to interest and instruct in its luges, par ticularly in the delineation of social life in pioneer das In the Golden West. A LIGHT WITHOUT HEAT. 1 lighly interesting experiments with a new ly discovered mineral essence took place a few evenings ago at the laboratory of the eminent Parisian anal) Ileal chemist, M, Wucitr. Hav ing filled a lamp with the liquid In question, and Igniting the.wick, M, Kordig, the discov erer of ihe essence, tossed the lighted lamp up against he celling, besprinkling the bystanders as well as himself with the flaming fluid. which, however, to the astonishment of all present, proved utterly devoid of heat or burn ing capacity. He then soaked. Us liandkcr chief in the essence sd set it on fire I the es tence burned itself out, but the handkerchief remained upinjuicd, as did his hat, after sub. jeetion to a similar tiul. Then MM. Wucitr, Duinas and hiicdcl plunged their hands into a pan filled with the burning liquid, withdraw. Ing them with lingers ill alight like so many thick jets of gas. They cxjiciicnccd no sen sation of heat whatsoever upon the skin tuiface thus apparently in a state of active combus tion. Other experiments followed of an equally wondeiful nature, conclusively demonstraling that the " Kordig ctmc" is capable of pro ducing light without heat. in Wc are plwued to chronicle the fact that the strwrtl arc bctclMl of dijt, ami.
