REMINISCENCES OP HONOLULU. XL IV. On the loth of January, 1855, George M. Kiiliutson was aiK)inleil a, justice of the su prime court in place of lion. Lorrin Andrews, ulio was comiriissioiitil judge of prolate. The fall season of 1854 limcil less arrials of whalers at the ports of these Islands than for the previous three seasons. The greatest catch reKtctl by one ship was that of Ihe South America, Captain Walker 2,600 bbls anil 45,000 lbs Ironc. February 9th, the King's birthday, was cele brated by a military review on Ihe plains, con sisting of cavalry, artillery and infantry, nurn Idling 550 men. The Hawaiian Guards, Captain J, II. llrown, made a fine, soldierly apearancc. Ten thousand persons, it was estimated, witnessed the review. In the evening there was a brilliint soiree at the l'alace. February 5th, arriveil the lurk What Chttr, from Hongkong, with 183 coolies. The Legislature of 1S55 was convened April 7th, The following were the representatives: Hawaii A. G. Thurston, G. It. Kalaukane, S.Kiii, I'auln, Keaniho, It, Kobinson, John lij Maui J. V. Austin, '.. I'. Kaumaea, D. Kaauwai, J. Kichardson, V. I'. Knhale, V. Kaluna; Oahii G. M. ltolwrtson, T. C. II. Kooke, J. V. i:. Maikai, J. Fuller. William Sumner, K. G. Davis; Kauai II. M. Whit ney, II. A. Wdemann, S. I'. Kalama. G. M. Koliertson waselectel speaker; O. II. Gulick, ck-rhj II. S. Swinton, sergeaut-at-arms, and Kev. V.. W. Clark, chaplain. March 19th, Judge Lee sailed for San Fran cisco en route for Washington as the King's tnvoy extraordinary and minister plenipoten tiary. June 12th, annual meeting of the Koval Hawaiian Agricultural Society. In the ab sence of the president, Judge Lee, Dr. K. W. Wood, one of the vice-presidents, took the chair. The address was delivered by Mr, Chase, American consul at Laluina. The Fair look place as usual on the 13th, but the exhibition fell far short of former )rurs in ipiantity and variety. June lith, died in Honolulu, the Hon. A. I'akl, the last of the family of old high chiefs. His ancestors lielongetl to the Kamrhameha and Kiwalao families of Maul ami Hawaii. Hi's father's name was Kalauihclemaiiluna, and liu mother's Kahooheihcialiui He was bom in Molokal in the veai " Ualakaa," about 1808, and was consequently not far from 47 y eats of age at the time of hU death. He was a man of commanding presence, fully six feet ill height, intelligent in countenance, and of a eiy light or thu complexion. Not only was he of high rank by birth, but he held an im (witant place in the councils of the nation. Among the offices held by him at different times were those of a judge of the supreme court, governor, privy councillor, incniK'r of the House of Nobles, and chamberlain of Kamchamcha II I. The most marked feature of his character was his limitless. He was for the last fourteen ) ears of his life a consistent iiieiulxr of the Kawaiahao church, and died in the faith of the Goscl, much lamented by a wide circle of friends, both foreign and na tive, and particularly by all the high chiefs. On the 16th of June the Legislative Assem bly was dUso!rd not prorogued liy the King, owing a a disagreement between the two houses In an item in the Appropriation Hill, the repiesentatives insisting on u)iiu Dr. (1. A. Lathrop tome $1,500 for services during the smallpox- epidemic of 1853, and the nobles throwing out the item when it came up. llcsides this, the representatives had passed a bill of aptMoptiations exceeding the estimated revenue by alwut $200,000. There seemed 110 prospect of agreement, inasmuch as the nobles bad nude repeated ellorts at conciliation with the representatives without success, and finally the Utter refused to confer with the nobles at all about the Appropriation Hill. The King therefore issued his proclamation dissolving the assembly, and ordered new elections to lake place on the following loth of July, It was a majority of two only in the representa tives, that causes! all the trouble. The principal acts (nssctl at this session werci To regulate nix-al in bankmptc); For the suppression of pros'ltution) To regulate assessment and collection of taxes; 1'ixing legal majority of males and females; Tariff and revenue rcgulillons; To Institute hospitals for sick Kjor; To regulate proceedings In courts of law; To rcgulitc the shipping and disclnrgc of seamen; To authorize a loan of $!50,rjr; Relating to Ihe public health and establishing the Hoard of Health. An amendment In the Constitution was proKscd (to be acted on the following )car) making the session o( the Leg ishturc tricnnlsl instcid of annual. After an incumbency of over six )ears Mr. V. O. Hall retired from the position of editor of the Polynesian and director of the govern ment press on the 30th of June, 1855, and was succeeded by Mr. C. (J. Hopkins. July 71I1 occurred the largest and most de structive fire that up to tint time had ever occurred in this city. 1 he "Varieties" Thea ter, a great shell of a wooden structure that stood on King street alKiul where Rose's car riage shop now stands, caught fire alwiiit 9130 o'clock in the evening and in a short time was ll.it with the ground, together with the ad joining buildings the iolicc station-house, the stores of Mr. Colin, Afong and Messrs. Watts fi Co., all dry goods dealers. A stone store Monging to Mr. II. Dimond escaped and prevented the spreail of the conflagration in that direction. A new wooden fence around the llcthcl premises had to be knocked down to save the building, which at one time was in imminent danger, so much so that Kev. Mr. Dinion gave it up for lost, and called upon those ersons who were in the belfry gillery to comedown ami save their lives. The door of the church nearest to where the lire was raging was very much charred with the heat. Had the Ilcthel actually got on fire, doubtless every building, large and small (all of wood), between King street and the waterside would have lieen destroved. Captain Snow's store (llvmin Ilros.), the Merchants' Kschangc Hotel Gatette office), the I'ostofficc (J. W. Kobcrtwn & Co.), and the Polynesian office (now Postofficc) were in imminent danger. Sparks flew seaward in every direction with the wind and set fire to combustibles so far away as Jas. Kobinson & Co.'s premises. Only by great exertions were several roofs prevented from igniting. Fortunately the trades were not blowing with their usual force. The loss was aliout $25,000. Mr. Swinton, the deputy nirshil, ofTercd $200 reward for information as to the supxsed inccndiiry. On the same day on which the fire occurred, ami just one hour before it broke out, a preliminary meet ing was held for the organization of a new fire company, to lie st)led "Honolulu Knginc Company No. 1." The company thus formed was officered as follows: Foreman, W. Z. Cuttrell; assistant foreman, IMward llurgcss; secretary, Henry I. Poor; treasurer, William F. Allen. The "Kxtraordiinry Session" of the Legis lature of 1855, rendered necessary by the non passage of the Appropriation Hill at the regu lar session, was opened on the joth of Jul) by the King in person. In his sjiccch the King said: It is solely to pass the Appropriation Hill that j 011 arc now brought together. I trust that while )our memories are so freshly charged with the circumstances that prevented unanimity between ) our two houses in regard to the bill of supplies, upon which sou were deliberating when lately I dissolved jou, there will be a desire on the iart of all to restrict the amount appropriated for the current sear within the probable limits of the scar's re ceipts. It is useless to imke appropriations for appearance sake, knowing that they will not, liecause they cannot, he acted on." The following were the representatives re turned for this session: Hawaii S. L. Aus tin, J. Kcawchano, Robert Robinson, John Ii, .II. L. Sheldon, Preston Cummings, J. Kupa- kec, Haalelea; Maui K. Maui, James W- Austin, Kahookano, II. Kmhelani, John Kich ardson, D. Kaauwai, S.
