DUKE FUND MUST HOV CHAMPION MADE LONDON HIT Raymond C .Brown Writes that Hawaii's Great Swimmer Has Kept Modesty With approximately $1200 in the fund being raised to secure a house and lot for Duke Kahanamoku. Ha waifs world-champion swimmer, the committee in charge of the fund has found that the people of Hawaii are allowing interest to lag in this move meat. Chairman W. T. Rawlins of the com mittee said this morning that the com mittee now has three available pieces of property in sight, but that it does not feel justified in going ahead with arrangements to secure any of them until it Is certain the fund will be. suf ficient He estimated this morning that about $2500 will be necessary. Mr. Rawlins has received a letter from Raymond C. Brown, agent of the Territorial Board of Immigration, from London, in which Mr. Brown pays a high tribute to Duke's modesty after his Olympic triumphs. -Says Mr. Brown: ' "Duke has been in London a few days, and I have spent some little time with him and hunting a silk bath ing suit After all the glory attached to winning the world's championship and the praise that has been showered upon him, Duke is still the. same un assuming young fellow he always has been, and I am glad for the editorial in the Star-Bulletia'of July 9: " 'Duke Kahanamoku's consistent success at the Olympic games and the manly way in which he has borne him self through a period, )t victory that might well upset the modestyof any athlete, are sources of pride to his friends here and reflect credit on the Islands. "It was with a great deal of pride that I introduced him to some of my acquaintances here and observed the admiration of those people for a world's champion. Do not think that 1 ': 1 W Tlje Federal grand ; jury: probably will return a partial report to tbe U. S. The Star-Bulletin, which is receiv ing subscriptions to the fund and has already turned over more than $500 to the committee, takes pleasure -in ac knowledging a check for $50 from the Kamehameha Alumni Association, ac companied by the following letter: "To the Editor of the Honolulu Star Bulletin. The proceeds of the benefit concert and bail game at Maui are still to be received, and there is a subscription list now being made up at the city hall on which more than $50 has been given. It is proposed to raise it to $100. And still the fund is only a little more than half secured.
