Slar-Bullf tin for TODAY'S news today V;iIEAT ACREAGE, BRITISH BIPIIIE, SHOWS UREASE j According to statistics recently com piled, the wheat acreage under culti vation In Great Britain, Canada, Aus tralia and New Zealand Increased from 11,500,000 acres in 1901 to 20,- 000 000 acres tn 1911 or more than 75 Ter cent To Canada -belongs the largest share of this ' increase in In 1891 the whole area of the Dominion was only 2.723,000 acres; 'while, this year It is estimated at 9,816,000 acres, an increase of nearly 260 per cent in twenty-two years. . Great - Britain and Ireland have about 2,000,000 acres under wheat cultivation; Australia's wheat acreage is about 7,500,000 acres, and New Zealand's about 350,000 acres. . India has nearly -' 30,000,000 acres in wheat.' or three-fifths of the entire area within. the empire. J The average production of Great Britain is greater t ian that of - the colonies or India, the yield there be ing thirty-three bushela to the 'acre. 1 his, however, Is far , from sufficing for the wants of the mother country It Is worth noting, however, that the British market is drawing more on tho wheat produced within the em pire, and. less on that 1 grown la for. eign countries, as the area' increases: Ot the total 192.000,000 bushels of wheat imported into the United King dom during -the Tear ending August 31st, India supplied 40,000,000 bushels, Canada 36,995,000 bushels, and Aus tralia. 28.317;O00 k bushels, while 77, 000,000 bushels were procured from us a, 'the" United States and the Ar gentine Republic. In the case of Rus sia 'and the' United States, it is prob able that the home demand absorbs the greater part of the crop, but Can ada and Australia have a decided lead in the wheat trade with the1 old coun try over the Argentine- Republic, which, with its vast fertile plains, is perhaps the: most formidable rival they are called upon to compete with: Ad other things being equal, however, the mother. country, naturally prefers to do business' with her own domin ions, and the day is perhaps not far distant when all the wheat required by the peopie of preat Britain, over and above what they raise themselve will be supplied by India and the col onies. ajiouver Sun. . : r : , k K t - -. . !.
