It sees nomic good to be derived from the re duction in the tariff, and fears its in fluence will be felt over the world. It we have the parting of th always -and the opening of a new era to sugar production. The fatuous action of the American government wiU give it a ereat imDetus. . Congress will right the wrong it has committed. The following is the ar ticle: It is said that the New York refin ers were among the moving spirits States consumers. Then the New York refiners will be sorry they spoke. This production of- refined sugar direct from the juice, is no new thing as far as the industry of beetroot iugar is concerned. There are the factories, and there are the sugar plantations and the beet fields They must be worked and they must be worked at a profit. If not, thousands of workmen will be thrown out of employment and millions of capital will be destroyed. It is a cruel thing, to bring a. .great industry into exist ence and then to destroy it, without any appreciable benefit to anybody. The original protection and encour age ment may have been an econom ic error certainly the ' exaggerated amount of it was ridiculous but that is no excuBe for the government of a great' country to turn around sud denly and destroy what it had itself helped to create, and to do so merely In obedience to a most erroneous and mischievous dogma. The industries are now considering what is to be done. There is, of course, still a ray of hope that before 1916 comes there may be a change of policy. It may. be possible though very difficult to educate the 90,000,000 people of the United States and get them to know and understand facts of which they are now ignorant One good method of doing so hhs already been started by Mr. Truman G. Palmer, who has published a most interesting and splendidly illustrated book, '"The Beet Sugar Factories of the United States," where the ignorant man-in-the-street may see pictures of the great beetroot sugar factories co lossal buildings and vast machinery the fields of beetroots stretching from the spectator to the horizon, the great army of laborers and agricul tural implements at work on the! land, and the herds of cattle feeding! on the beetroot pulp from the fac-i .tory. He sees this and is told that! 'all this is to be sacrificed to the ridi-1 culous dogma that there shall n ;er be a duty on sugar. He may then perhaps reconsider his position as a man with a vote. But it this is not to be, then comes the real struggle. . Factories and planters must find out how to keep going and make a profit, or they must collapse. Can they do it? We think they can, but it will take time, and money, and, above all, energy, capacity, good management, and de termination. There is now no long er any incentive to them to turn out . only raw sugar. The beetroot fac- I toties even now turn out all their ' sugar in the form of white granulat ed the kind of refined sugar most popular in the United States.
