Use of Stock Phrases
Professor Brewster, in his book on
the writing of English, in the Home
University Library, makes an unex
pected defense of stock phrases. They
indicate, he says, "a natural tendency
against which it S wasteful to strive."
They are an intellectual shorthand!
most of the business of life Is done by
their aid; they help us, like habits and
customs." That may be true enough
of their use in conversation and in
business transactions. Hut literature
and in his book, he is concerned
with literature Is not conversation,
nor is it a business transaction. We
all have to talk, and most of us have
to transact some business, "but-ive
need not write for publication unless
we have something of sotn:? moment
to say, and it Ls part of the craft of
writing to say this as shortly as pos
sible. Nothing of any moment. can be
said in stock phrases, and if a writer
who lias something to say makes use
of them it is merely as a meuivs of
connection between one part of his
subject, and another. I5ut to do this is
to confess failure; for. if a writer's
thought is clear and well arranged in
his mind it will prog-reas in his writing
Irom one point to another without the
help of words that say nothing in part
tictiiar. At every step it will mak.
Its own phrase?, and those, though
they may not strike us by their novel
ty, will not weary us by their n;ile
hpss. It is only when a writer has
come to a break in his thought, and
does not know how u conceal it. that
he clutches at s'ock phrases ' it is a
far cry. he remarks, from what hf
hM said to what lu' is oine to r-
