"The ' Flames of Johannis" is the
latest offering at the Hawaii theater,
alio the latest vehicle for Nance
O'Xeil.' America's queen of stormy
passion, to come to Honolulu. Asso
ciated with Miss O'Neil in this offer
ing; are a number of stars who are
virtually strangers to Hawaii audi
ences. However, they are capable ar
tists and should prove big favorites.
The story, which is based on "Jqhan
nisfeuer, Hermann Sudermann's fa
mous tory. is rather a peculiar one
and is peculiarly adapted to the emo
tional and dramatic ability of the
star, who appears as Marika. a Gypsy
girl purchased m infancy by a kindly
hearted man, who also adopts the in
fant son of his dead brother. The
children are childhood sweethearts,
but in later years in an. angry mood
the boy proposes to the daughter of
his adopted parents. Iater he real
izes his love for Marika, hut she re
fuses to be a party to the heart-breaking
of the old folks she has learned
to love. She insists on the marriage,
burying: her" own love for the greater
love of those around her.
Helen Holmes, the fascinating star
of the Hawaii serial, "The C.irl and the
Came," is already a strong favorite
at this house, while the thrilling rail

'.'.''The Making of Maddalena." a fea
ture photo drama from the Oliver Mo
rosco Photo-play' Company studio,
came to the Liberty theater last night
with Edna Goodrich in the leading
role, and Forrest Stanley in the sup
porting cast. ' This is Miss Goodrich's
second appearance before the camera
since her return from the war zone
last spring, where she worked as a
nurse in the battlefield hospitals. ;
Kdna Goodrich and Forrest Stanley
make a splendid couple and their
work together is excellent. In "The
Making of Maddalena" they have a
fine vehicle and one that is filled with
strong scenes. The story deals with
the life of a wealthy young artist,
who marries his model and loses caste
with his family. Through the knav
ery of his father the artist and Ills
wife are separated and their child tak
en from the model " wife. This is
merely the prelude to the gripping
tlory "in which the wife wins .hack her
husband despite his family's efforts, to
keep them apart.
"The Iron Claw" has now reached
the 17th chapter with the excitement
as keen as at any time, and without
