The China Mail Steamship Company officials here last night formally an nounced the purchase of the coast wise steamer Congress, wh?ch was run ashore some months ago. with flames bursting from her hull. .The price paid for the wrecked steamer Is said to have been one million dollars and the company is reported to be planning to pend an additional 1800,000 for repairs and alterations. Purchase of the Congress, owned 07 the Pacific Coast Steamship Company, which was last Summer merged with the Pacific Steamship Company, wUl give the China Mail three steamer, the first being the former Pacific Mall ei China, which has been Ton the trans pacific run a year and a quarter. She called here January 13, 1916, 09 her first visit as a China Mall boat. The. second boat is the Nile, which is stili In .service for the British admiralty.- . Reports have been circulating on the Coast that the China Mail had let con tracts for four new steamers to be built at Puget Sound shipyards, but officers of the China when she was here last on her way to the Orient, February 28,' said no contracts had been let and so far-as, they knew no additional steamers had been secured up to that date. Congress May Be First As soon as the British admiralty re leases the old liner Nile, also a former Pacific Mailer, from the British trans port service, in which she has been engaged' almost since the beginning of the European war, the Nile will be placed oa the transpacific' run, "alter nating "with the -China, When the Congress Is in shape for sea again it is likely she wilL be placed on the run, probably before the Nile is released. The Nile,' although, owned formerly by the Pacific Mail, is under British regis try,' She was commandeered, early in theEuropean war. .'. ' . OH Tank Withstood ' Fire - Tbfi Pacific Marine Review, March number; contains a graphic account of the damage done the Congress by the fire which broke out at sea on Septem ber 14 of last year, off Coos Bay.
