Three more deaths among cattle from an thrax occurred on Maul last Saturday. They were on the Haleakala ranch, but In a pasture which has had no known connection with any of the previous outbreaks. The pasture Is on the slope of the mountain above Makawao and below Ollnda, and Is traversed by the usually traveled road to the top of the mountain. As a con sequence the board of agriculture has included this road in Its proclamation of roads which are tabu to all animal travel. No domestic animals of any kind may be taken up the mountain by way of the Makawao Catholic church and Ollnda. Automoalle .Theory Strengthened In discussing the situation Dr. J. C, Fitzgerald, deputy territorial veterin arian for Maul stated that the new 1 outbreak is as inexplicable as the others, except on the theory that it was deliberately planted by human agency. The theory of C. S. Judd, ex ecutive of the board, announced some time since, that the disease has been distributed from an automobile, is borne out once more in this Instance, Dr. Fitzgerald stated. All the foci of infection on MauL- including this 1st est have occurred in pastures ad jacent to automobile roads, and in none that are not thu accessible. The road up the mountain as far as Ollnda is still open to automobile travel, Dr. Fitzgerald states, but ani mals, including dogs, will be destroyed if found within the prescribed area. In the Paanul pasture, which is the name of the new infected district are 740 head of cattle. These were all rounded up last Sunday aad Injected with virus and serum, and no mors cases have since beea reported. No have any new cases occurred la say of the other centers of infection. Dr. Fitzgerald feels that the epidemic is very well la hand. New Homestead Ares Affected. Inasmuch as the Paanul pasture In cludes the lands below Ollnda sur veyed and soon to be opened for homestesding, the latest outbreak may seriously affect a considerable number of persons who may take up the land, but be handicapped in the matter of livestock; with which, to de velop their places. Two thousand dol lars goes forward la the mail from Hilo to Washington today and the money is consigned to the American Red Cross secretary. The title of these cattle seems to. be ia doubt ana Mr. Westgats. asked If the board of trade would have say objection to the sale of the cattle. It was unanimous., !y decided that .the sscretary of the board should write to Mr. Westgate and say that the board had no interest in the cattle and that the directors of the experiment station ' could do as they saw fit at to disposing of the animals. . - , : The committee whlca las been ap pointed win report to the board of trade at a' later date.
