Experiment Station and George K. Jjarrison have been con ducting a cooperative experiment to determine the best varieties of beans for planting In Manoa valley. Although these experiments have not yet been concluded, sufficient data is. now , in band so that it is possible to recom mend - certain varieties . ; with confi dence. . - : v-:i.;'."';i' .-:. r-:i Tot use as dry leahs. the Maul red. Maui calico, red kidney and speckled kidney have proved to be very excel lent sorts and. have given good yields. Ftr green snap beans, the strinxless green pod has given most satisfactory results, yielding heavily of tender, ensp pods for use both as green beans and for salads. The Kentucky won der, although not grown in these car tlcular experiments, has given , under similar conditions good yields and the beans are of good quality. This Is a climbing variety, however, and V: re quires poles or some other, support; while the strlngless green pod grows aa a buch variety, - : j ror sv yellow or wax bean to be eaten in the pod before fully mature. aa is aiso the case with green beans, no . better variety has been : found than the golden wax. This is of heavy yield and of very' fine appearance as well as tender and of superior flavor. A cowpca' of the variety known as the black eye was planted beside the varieties of. beans. Some of the cow peas are much used drjrln the same manner as dried beans, are used. This variety, however, has proved to be a complete failure under existing con ditions because of its being attacked by tbe melon fly. rJtmes Cowan of the experiment station has been not ing the pro-res of these beans and reports that a very blgb percentage of the,'pods are Infested with larvae of the melon fly. !
