In approaching a discussion of the subject we do so fully aware that a technical description would be beyonJ our own comprehension as vail as the .comprehension of the majority of our readers. The newly discovered phenomenon which appears to be unexplainabie n based upon metal as contained in ore being separated by means of oil In agitation, the latter having a nat ural affinity for metal. The affinity is said to be greatest and metal recovery highest when the proportion of oil to ore Is relatively leaeL There are several processes of such similarity that litigation is in progress as to their respective rights. The process In embryo is as old as the hills, but as perfected, to meet com mercial condition la . comparatively modern and resulted from experimen tatlons with a mechanical device in one Instance and by amplifylnp the earlier processes in the others. The claims of the discoverer of one of the processes serves to disclose the process Itself, which Is a follows: The process of concentrating cre, In question, consists of mltins pow dered ore with water adding a small proportion or oily iwuld Having a ; 3 ipr.ferentIal,afflnJty,for, etaUirerou? - matter, (amounting to a fraction of 1 per cent on tha orej then 'agitating - the mixtura until ti e oil-coated ruin : eral matter forms a froth hlch goes 4 to the surface, (called flotation.) This modern method of ore treat ment has enabled a number of min ing companies which were operating at a loss to now operate at a profit. They had gangs of men out at this work in sev eral places." Coelho says that M. S. Deponte has been named as deputy sheriff for Ma kawao district in place of David Mor ton, deceased. WORK ON HILO'S BIG ' BREAKWATER MAKING SPLENDID PROGRESS (Special Stir-Bulletin Correspondence.) HILO, Sept. 7. Work on the ex tension of the Hilo breakwater has progressed so far that the placing of the rock on the sub-structure is fin ished and tuere now remains the plat ing of the large rocks that form the capping of the structure. This later work is to be pushed ahead as rapidly as possible by the contractor. The breakwater job has been under way for about seven years now and still there is a tremendous amount of work still to he done before the job is finished. Further appropriations of money by congress are needed and it is to be hoped that the money be given in the near future, or else there v. ill be a further delay in construction work. As the breakwater creeps o it. man changes are being noticed in the cur rents of Hilo and Reed's bay. Where formerly the water used to swing rap idly around the whole bay, it now drifts along slowly and debris from the Wailoa river Is deposited at many points around Reed's bay where be tore it used to oe carried out to sea.
