A. building, last night The address was heard by the students of the "Y" day and night schools, and Cooke hall was filled to capacity. Mr. Smith- congratulated ;the young men on - the fact that: they were de voting their evenings jand other spare time to study.- He touched but briefly on the great world ' war. Speaking of Germany, he said: 'If there Is one thing that has made Germany more powerful in the last several years it is the; Tact that' its people have been studying day and night." He declared that every young man should - strive to ' Improve himself to get a better job and earn more money. And his educational training, he added, must be backed up by a clean body und a strong character If he expects to come out victorious in life's battles. . Toung men today, he continued, are winning success In life on the narrow est of margins, and the man, with the margin of education Is going to come out on top. FRED B. SMITH WILL TALK JO ATHLETES AT Y. M. C. A. THIS EVENING .One of the best, events at the Y. M. C. A. has been- the football? banquet which for a number of years has proved an excellent get-together of the gridiron artists from the : various schools at the close of - the season. This evening a special student rally for the fellows from all the schools will be staged In the Y. 11. C A. games hall. at .7:30. ... Fred B. Smith, the big 225-pound orator and athlete of New York, will be the attraction. He will deliver an address to the audience of boys and young men from Punahou, McKinley, Kamehameha, College of Hawaii, Mills and the Honolulu Military academy falong with the students of the Y. M. C. A. day and night schools. Godfrey Bergman of Punahou will fead some rousing singing, which starts at 7:30 sharp, with Glenn Jackson, physical director of the "Y," at the piano. CENTRAL UNION' HAS INTERESTING SOCIAL, ENLISTED MEN GUESTS Enlisted men of the service were I guests last n'ght at a social given by the women's society of Central Union church. This was the second of a sei ries of monthly socials that are to vbe given" this winter. The program included solos by Mrs. George Tackabury, accompanied by Miss Alice Harrison; comic songs by G. L. Bergman, accompanied by Miss ; Helen Grace Cadman; readings by Miss Porterfield, instructor in ex ' pression at Punahou, and a number, I "Over There," by the men's quartet of ! the church.
