BODY OF QUEEN
IS SEALED AWAY
"Pau. Lilluokalani; pau, alii!" wail
ed the old retainers of the queen yes
terday, as the casket containing the
royal remains was rolled into the
niche reserved for it, and sealed be
hind a wall of solid masonry.
Every night last week, while the
queen's casket rested on its bier in
the mausoleum, awaiting final inter
ment, those two faithful souls, Myra
and Wakeke, accompanied and
strengthened in their watch by Mrs.
Lahilahi Webb, Jhave remained near
the crypt, two of them always keeping
the vigil, while perhaps one of the
other three found a few hours' needed
sleep on the grass under, the trees. A
policeman, too, has been on guard
throughout the week.
Yesterday, just after sunrise, the
active pallbearers, accompanied by
Colonel and Mrs. Curtis P. Jaukea,
Prince Kalanianaole, Charles F. Chil-
Ilngworth, Mrs. Lahilahi Webb, Mrs.
Mana and the two loyal old servants,
followed by the undertaker, .Henry H.
Williams, and John Walker and his
masons, went down into the crypt
The casket was swung into the niche
that awaited it, and with the work of
the masons the wailing of the women
Liliuokalani rests beside her
husband, the late Governor John
Owen Dominis.- Immediately opposite
are the tombs of Kalakaua and . his
queen, Kapiolani. Only three niches
remain to be filled. It is over, the old
regime, the old glory of old Hawaii.

IN ROYAL CRYPT
TO SERVICE MEN
With its grounds, lanais and corri
dors made gay and colorful with the
hundreds of 'Hawaiian and American
flags that were used in its decoration,
the old Royal Hawaiian hotel was for
mally turned over to the soldiers and
sailors of the United States yesterday
afternoon as a Y. M. C. A, Seats had
been placed on the lawn and 'lanais
for more than a thousand persons
and practically every seat was occu
pied. The music for the occasion was es
pecially good, the f. S. Navy band,
with Charles E. Douglas as director,
rendering a number of deligntful se
lections, which, with the singing of
the Apollo club, and the beautiful
solos given by Mrs. Charles L. Hall
and Mr. George A. Brown, made tho
afternoon a musical treat ,
James Wakefield presided and
gave J all praise to Honolulu for its
generosity In making it possible to
give the beautiful old hotel building
to the army and navy. In his review of
the work being done by the Army
and Navy Y. M. C. A.'s throughout
the country, Mr. Wakefield called at
tention to the 'fact that when a cam
paign was launched for' 135,000,000
the people responded with a subscrip
tion for $49,000,000. .
"Every cent of thU money will be
needed to finance the Christian work
that is being carried on among the
men who are fighting our' battles,"
said the speaker. "And I will say, and
say It deliberately, that this is not
alone the kaiser's war, but the war "of
the infamous German people. The
kaiser could not have started it, nor
could he keep it up, if he did not have
the solid backing of (he Huns."
In the dedicatory address Fred B.
Smith said that it was his firm belief
if the Y. M. C. A. had been as active
in Russia during the past three years
as it has been in England, France and
America the Germans would still find
plenty to keep them active on tha
eastern front. "It is not munitions of
war that Russia has lacked' said. Mr.
Smith, "In Vladivostok, guns and
equipment are piled high and solidly
for a two mile stretch, but the solidity
of purpose that is born of unified Y.
M. C. A:: work is lacking, and Russia
Is all split to pieces." . '
After the dedication services the
people were invited in to inspect the
building, when the numerous recrea
tion and improvement features were
noted, among them being a splendH

table,' chess, dominoes, magazines,
