Washington, March 5. During Ui,tcloMii' hours of the session there
were passed three bills or clauses which greatly titfect the Hawaiian
Islands. The most important, nerlmn is a hill which puts in the power
of the Secretary to the Treasury thoftreation of such sub-ports of entry
as may bo considered desirable in thoxMands. In the bill which allows
the depositing of customs receipts in national depositories in Porto Rico,
Alaska and-Hawaii the amendment to'eotlon filiW of the i'icvi.-.ed Statutes
will stop an annual drain of nearly a million dollars from thu Islands, the
money heretofore having been sent to the Sub-Treasury. In the sundry
civil bill there is a clause which authorizes the redemption of the bonds
of the Republic ot Hawaii and appropriates over $U,000,0(IO for that pur
pose and payment of interest, which will be duo before payment may be
made.
No Trace of Wreck.
San Francisco, March -1. The Japanese divers, who arc proving them
selves to bo wonderful workers at extreme depths, wore out again for
several hours yesterday trying to locate the wreck of the Rio. On
Saturday they began with the red buoy and the spot where Pilot Jordan
"located" the wreck', and worked backward and forward for nearly
a mile to the west. They changed their tactics yesterday, trying the
bottom nearer the shoie and close up the reef. Inmost of their work
they walked or. the bottom, following their boat, which was in tow of the
tug Alert. Again they found no trace.
Attacked The Emperor.
Berlin, March 7. An attack upon Emperor William by Dietrich Weiland,
was made while- the former was driving from the Rathskeller to the

London, Feb. 28. Commandant Dc Wot recently advised Commandant
Hcrtzog that unless the raid into Cape'Colony proved a signal success it
would be better to consider the advisability of surrendering.

Washington, Feb. 27. Senator Perkins' amendment to the sundry

was stricken out by the Committee- on Appropriations today after a
vigprous light had been -made in its behalf.
