The Wan Priced Crab.
One of the most singular looking crea
tures that over walked tho earth or
swam tlio water under tlio earth1'
is the world famous man faced crab
of Japan. Its body is hardly an inch
in length, yet the head is fitted with
a faco which is the perfect counter
part of that of a Chinese coolie, a
veritablo inissinlliilc, with eyes,
nose and mouth allclearly defined.
This curious and uucanny creature,
besides the great likeness itbcnr
to a human being inthe matter of
facial features, is provided with two
legs which pcem togrow from the
top of its head and hang down over
the sides ot it faeo. Besides these
legs, two "feelers'' each about an
inch in length, grow from tho "chin"
of the animal, looking forall tho
world like a colotfbl's forked beard.
These man faced crabs fairly swarm
in the seas of Japan.
McKlnlcy's Irish Home.
Dornoelc House.Coxint Antrim, the
ancient homo of the McKinley family
in Ireland, before their emigration to
America a substantial stone fai'm-
house is still standing. On an old
stono slab by the hall door the initials
of the McKinley or a century and a
half ago are thus inscribed "W.M'K,
1705." Inthe insurrection of 1!),
arms and ammunition were found by
the military in Dorncck House, and a
William McKinley, a namesake and
irranduncle of the late President, was
arrested, brought to Coloratnc, where
he was tried by eourt-mai tial, con
victod and sentenced to death. He
was shot in tho market place of Co-
loraine and was 'juried in the church
yard of Dernbck, whoro there is a
headstone still standing in good pre
serration over his grave Glasgow

Professor H. II. Powers, formerly
of Stanford Univorsity, now Pro
fessor of Sociology at Cornell, strong
ly reitorates his position announced
some time ago that feeble-minded per
sons should bo killed for the benefit
"I am strongly in frtvor of killing
off tho weak in society for the benofit
of tho strong," said Professor Pow
ers. ' 'I would kill off tho fceblo-mlnd
cd and all others who may bo a bur
den as I would kfll so many rattle
snakes. Nature formerly weeded
out the unfit, but now life is made so
much easier that a largo percentage
of those who arc a burden to tho bet'
ter clement are helped to live."
Adornment of Arab Girls.
Arab girls before they enter the
harem and tako the veil are a curious
sight to behold. Their bodies and
faces are dyed a bright yellow with
tumeric. On this ground they paint
black Hues with antimony over their
eyes. The fashionable color for the
nose is red, green spots adorn the
checks,and the.'general aspect is gro

Liquid air is still a curiosity: now
comes the announcement that solid
air has been produced, at a temperat
ure yet unmeasured. It looks like
ice, but is of different consistency and
has great tensile strength. . A gallon
of liquid air has the cooling power of
85 pounds of ice: tho same amount of
spli'l air, tho theorists say, would
chill the largest storage warehouse
The proportions of tho human fig

the length of tho right foot. The
face, from the highest point of the
forehead, whore the hair begins,, to
tho end of the chin, is one-tenth of
tho whole statue. Tho hand, from

Washington, November 15. It is
said at tho States Department that
no authorization has boon sent Con

exemption from punishment of the

as one of tho conditions of her ransom.
In fact, our Government has not
authorized any promiso whatovor to

future, or that would prevent it either
from insisting on tho punishment of
tlio brigands or from lodging a de
