THE MAUI NEWS SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 1906 5 LOCALS A large number of race-course en thusiasts were on the track of the Maui Racing Assoculion one day this week to witness the performance of the many horses that are already in training lor the Fourth of July. Some excellent races will be run and close finishes are expected. A very large pear tree that stood by the oflice of the Maui Publishing Company has been cut down as it showed signs of decay. The fruit on one of the trees that still stands has brought as high as t35.00 per year to its owner and has been no expense, jjfcr'v do people not plant more of these profitable trees? The work on the concrete sidewalk will soon te completed on Main Street and it will then be begun 'on Mar ket Street. His Honor A. N. Kepoikai is busy this week hearing the many cases passed up to him by the attorneys, who preferred to have him hear the cases without the expense of a jury, thus saving much to the tax payers and earning the gratitude of the jurymen who all have work that they would prefer doing than to be detain ed on a jury for weeks at a time. District Magistrate McKay had about thirty Takes before him one day this week, who were charged with gambling. The cases were not proven and the Celestials were allow ed to go home and sin no more. The Su erintendent of the Wailu-ku-Kahului Water Works is again calling attention to the rules govern ing the use of water for lawn sprink ling. The notice appears in this issue of the News. Black Bess out ran Frank S one day this week in a three eighths mile dash, but there are a number who still think Frank S the better horse. The bids for the construction of the concrete sidewalk on High street will be opened next week. Elama Punohu was before Judge A. N. Kepoikai on appeal from the decision of the lower court, wherein be was charged with assault and battery on a Market street Chink. The Judge patiently listened to all the evidence produced by i the prose cution and then on a motion of Puno hu's attorney J. L. Coke, promptly dismissed the case. The funeral of Mrs. Esther Jack sou on Monday was largely attended, which showed the high esteem in which she was held by all. A special dinner will be given at the Maui Hotel on the evening of the Fourth of July for the accommodation of the many who will be in attendance at the races. Toe ivahului Tennis UluD will give a moonlight dance on the evening of Tuesday, July 3rd. Attention is called to the fact that the date on the transportation card "Saturday, July 3rd" is a typographical error due to the great amount or rush work on hand at the time the printing was done. Manager C. B. Wells received new Reo by the east Steamer. A feature of the day at the races will be Kaae's Quintet Club which will give the visitors the benefit of some of Honolulu's best music to con dole those who lose and cheer those who win. Kaae has just completed the engrossing of two cop les of the resolutions passed by the County Supervisors after the death ofiSupervisor John Halualani, and his workhas won the admiration of all who have seen it. Mr. Kaa,e was formerly a pupil of Brother Frank at the St. Louis College, and much of his sk'll is due to the efforts of this excellent teacher. Card of Thanks. Mrs. A. Copeland and wife have moved into the new teachers' cottage that was recently completed in the school yard. Frank Lufkin is spending a short vacation up at Ukulele. Rider Olsen is on Maui from Kahu- ku to spend a short vacation. He will retura shortly after the Fourth of July. Miss Jennie Hansen has returned to her liomo from the Normal School in Honolulu where she graduated re cently. Attend the races on the Fourth of July and see the best races held for a long time. Miss Christoffersen of Kabuku is pending a vacation with Mi s Jennie Hansen in town. Miss Cleo Case returned to her home from school on Tuesday evening. Miss Julia K. Bush, who has been acting as stenographer during the present term of Judge Kepoikai's Court, departed Wednesday by the Claudine for Honolulu. Her father was reported ill last week. Mr. Jan. Hattie of the Kahului Railroad Co. returned from Honolulu Tuesday night. J.J. Newcomb of Kaanapali was in town Thursday and returned the same day. He was called as a j'lry man in the case of Aheong ' versus Haiku Sugar Company but was not drawn on the case as the jury box was filled before his name was called. Mr. Aupuni Hayselden and wife were passengers by Tuesday's Mauna Loa for Kau, where they will rusti cate for a few weeks. Walter Hayselden passed through on his way home. It is rumored that he will have Judge tacked on to his name in the near future. Mr. Hayselden has a host of friends here in Lahaina, his old home, and it will do Lahaina proud to have one of her sons grace the bench at Kau. Hugh Howell left by the gasoline launch Saturday for Molokai, where he goes on a tour of general inspec tion of roads and bridges in general. Mrs. Kahaulelio, wife our ex-Judge Kahaulelio of Lahaina, died at their residence after a short illness. She was loved by all whoknaw her and was a pillar of the Wainee Church'. Per funeral was largely attended. The Pioneer Mill ground its last cane of the 190G crop at 2:30 p. ni. Juue 27th, 190G.
