On Sunday, Dec. 8ih,' Boa. W. H.
Rice, of Kauai, ihe Pi-esiden' of the
Sundav School Association af Hawaii,
isited the Kaahumanu Church ol
waiiuitu, anu spone in me imprests
of the Sunday Schools of the Terri
tory to a mass meeting of the Hawa
iians from Wailuku, Waikapu. Wah
hee, Kahului and Paia. Special
trains were run for the occasion. A
collection ol $50 was taken and paid
to Rev. R. B. Dodge, the Treasurer
of the Kaahumanu Church of Wailu
ku toward the church debt.
On Christmas Day, Dec. 25th.
there will be a Sunday School, exhi
bition of the Sunday Schools of this
district at the Waikapu Church. It
will be well worth the time of the
people to no to this gathering. The
suites promise to be good, and there
will be au excellent luiu served in
the afternoon.
Last Tuesday at the Foreign Pro
tcstant Church of Makawao the
ni uithly meeting of the Maui minis,
ters was held. There was a large
attendance, and iho session was one
of the most instructive and interest
iug for many months. Rev. E. B.
Turner read an excellent paper upon
the topic "What a congregation may
expec.1 from its pastor." This was
following by a very clear and stimu
late g paper by the Rev. Albert
Kidman D. D., upon "How to study
the Bible." Rev. John Nua of Wailu
ku preached the sei'mon in Hawaiian,
while Rev: R. 13. Dod;e conducted
the devotional exercises of the day.
The ladies of tha church furnished a
delicious luncheon.
The ErskineM. Phelps is on her
way from Seattle in ballast for Kahu
lui for sugar. Shis one of thu larg
est four masted ships of America.
The Knights of Pythias will hold
their annual election of officers to
night. A large attendance is desired.
The schools have "losed for the
fall term.
The dispute over baseball between
two of the local teams was decided
by a boad of arbitration this week
in favor of playing the game in dis
pute over again.
Two district earthquake shocks
visited Maui just before nine o'clock
Thursday night.

H. Miki the Japanese interpreter
has been on Maui on . business for
some days from Honolulu.
W. G. Scott of Paia went to Hono
lulu last Friday night to see the wild
west show. He returned Tuesday.
George Cooke and Wlliam William'
son returned Weduesday from a visit
to the Hawaiian American Rubber
Co's. plantation at Nahiku which
they found to be in good shape. Mr.
Williamson and Inspector of Schools
H. M. Wells went to Lahaina to in
vestigate school matters there.
W. A. Ye-Us teacher at Nahiku,
came over to Wailuku th is week to
take part in the annual toachers
meeting.
Mr. Medeiros of the liana school t5
in Wailuku to attend the teachers
meeting and to spend his Christmas
vacation here. '
Hon. S. E. Kalama of Makawao
was a visitor to the County seat on
Thursday of this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Maeiel of Kaupo are
speuding their Christmas vacation in
Wailuku. Mrs. Maciel is one of the
teachers in the school at Kaupo.
School Inspector 11. M. Wells is in
Wailuku this week.
C, D. Lufkin, cashier of the First
National Bank of Wailuku and of the
Lahaina National Bank of Lahaina
is expected bank from the cast hext
mouth. Mrs. Lufkin is much improv
ed in health and will accompany him
on his return.
J. P. Cooke returned to Honolulu
Wednesday. He lias been a guest of
Hon. H. P. Baldwin for some weeks.
Miss Akana was a passenger to
Honolulu this week.
Mrs. Nanimalua Kapoi of Walhee
went to Honolulu this week
Dr. J. J. Carey is kept busy in his
dental parlors over the First National
Bank. His work is proving satis
factory and he will doubtless build up
a good practice.
Attorney J. L. Coke left for the
Coast on business Thursday. He
will be gone two mouths.
Judge A. N. Kepoikai has lully
recovered from his recent illness.
Repi eseutative A. J. Gomes of
Paia went to Honolulu Thursday for
a two weeks vacation. William Bell
of Kahultii has charge of the office
during Mr. Gomes absence.
Robert J. Law principal of the
Lahaina school came over to Wailuku
Thursday.
