ter mains burst flooding houses.
The Alaskan cable parted several hours before denoting severe dis
turbances in the North.
SAN FUANCISCO, January 12. lleney was enthusiastically wel
comed on his return from Pittsburg. He will begin the Calhoun trial
today.
INDIANAPOLIS, January 12. Marshall, the first Democratic
governor since 1892, was inaugurated today.
MESSINA, January 12. Continued earthquakes and severe tem
pests have destroyed temporary shelters.
BELLINtJlIAM, Wash., January 12, Lumbering has been aban
doned on account of the severe cold.
WASHINGTON, January 12. Tillman denies every charge and
scored Roosevelt.
HONOLULU, January 11. -Dr. Atcherley was arrested for attempt
ing to kill Dr. Wayson by firing revolver shots through his window
Sunday morning at three o'clock. This was hi.- third visit to the house.
A kona storm is blowing in the vicinity of Waialua. Several
small houses were upset.
HONOLULU, lanuary 10. A shortage is hinted at in the case of
Stayton. He was short once befoie and the amount was made up by
him. Postmaster Pratt expresses great sentiment.
A white gambler at the beach is winning from natives. He may
be run out of town.
BERNE, Switzerland, January 11. An ancient church collapsed
yesterday and many worshippers were burned to death.
HOME, January 11. The Pope received Archbishop Ireland yes
terday and sent, the apostolic blessing to the people of the United

WASHINGTON, January 10. Breckons' case is before the Presi
dent, No action will be taken until Senator Warren of Wyoming sees
the charges.
LAS PALAS, Canary Islands, January 10. A severe earthquake
shock occurred here. Many buildings were damaged.
MEXICO CITY, January 10. Earthquake shocks were felt along
the Western coast of Mexico yssterday. They were severe at Acapulco
and Oaxaca.
WASHINGTON, January 10. The Secretary of the Treasury has
called upon National banks for $2,500,000 of their government de
posits. SEATTLE. January 10. There was a fall of nine inches of snow.
BUTTE, Mont., January 10. Idaho is in the grip of a blizzard.
Traffic is blocked.
WASHINGTON. January 10. Congress lias passed a resolution to
investigate an appropriation to uncover frauds and punish criminals
involved in matters investigated by the secret sefvice.
UNION CITY, January 9. Six night riders were sentenced to be
hanged on February 19.
HONOLULU, January 9. Judge Kepoikai appsars to have the
laugh on his enemies. Advices from Washington say there is no
foundation for the report of Kepoikai's resignation and no signs of the
case being reopened.
Assistant Postmaster Stayton has been arrested for tampering
with Inspector Hare's mail.
W. O. Smith sayB Mayor Fern must name the officers
WASHINGTON, January 9. The House adopted resolutions
purging President's message of secret service paragraphs. They were
declared disrespectful to Congress. The President responded by dis
closing a report made by secret service men implicating Senator Till
man in llip land frauds of Oregon. He showed copies of lettere Till
man sent to his agent in Oregon instructing the latter to reserve eight
sections in the names of the Tillman family. Meanwhile Tillman in
troduced a resolution to compel railroad owners to sell land cheaply as
provided in their grant.
The Senate has instructed the Judiciary Committee to report whe
ther the President was authorized to permit the absorption of the Ten
nesiee coal and Iron by the United States Steel Trust. The absorption
was an incident of the panic. In consequence of President Roosevelt's
approval Morgan was able to wipe out remaining competitors.
The House devoted its time to debate on secret service. The
President was vigorously assaulted.
REGGIO, January 9. One thousand bodies were dug from the
ruins. Three children were recovered alive.
SAN FUANCISCO, January 9. -Matson has ordered a million
dollar steamer from Newport for the Honolulu run.
PARIS, January 9. A mail sack containing $200,000 was stolen
o a street in broad daylight.
HELENA, Mont , January 9. A blizzard has been raging for
four days.
SAN FRANCISCO, January 9. -Police Sargent Nolting was shot
dead by private Jordan of the Coast artillery.
SACRAMENTO, January 8. An anti race track gambling law
was introduced today.
