JULY 24. 1!0!)
A Changing The loading dailies of (he territory nre voicing a
Sentiment change of sentiment of the people toward tho un
desirable element of the Japanese.
The criminal class of Japanese of this territory is alarmingly
large and seems to increase fi.sler proportionately than does the
laboring class.
The class of Japs who live by gambling and other lower criminal
ways are the ones who nre especially active in tho higher wage
agitation. If tho strike had succeeded they would have gained.
While the strike' is on they gather the funds from the ignorant,
laborers and it is safe to say that much of it sticks to their ringers.
There is no way of telling how much is collected nor is there any
check on the solicitors of funds so we nre credibly informed.
The territory must rid its self of this element. These fellows
who do not work are the ones who are the cause of all the trouble
and are a menace to the welfare of the public.
The impudence of Fred Makino, the strike President has prob
ably not been surpassed. His statement to the sheriff of the City
and County of Honolulu that he would have baen killed had ho re
sisted the mob that had surrounded him while iu the discharge of
his ollicial duty merits the severest condemnation.
The Star of tho 19th iustant says editorially.
The Hawaiian Islands have brought Japanese
here by tens of thousands. After being brought
here, most of them landing as coolies who never
saw a coat, a collar or a pair of pants, they have
been paid wnges that would have looked fabulous
in their old homes, and they have become, m.my
of them, quite a dudish lot of strikers. While
paying .them high wages, this community has tax
ed itself to give free education to the children of
these aliens. Hundreds of thousands of dollars v
are being paid by citizens of the land to educate
these Japanese children. We doubt whether there
is anywhere else under the sun a community
which pays as much as does this Territory for
the education of alien minors. We are quiie sure
that there is no other which pays as good wages
to Japanese laborers. What is the result? Strikes,
' unbearable "cockiness,'' lawlessness, utter con
tempt for our police and laws, unless physical
force is brought inoo play, and u return to Japan
month by month of. hundreds of thousands of dol
lars paid here in wages to these fortunate aliens
tenant s of American soil. - Is t his a game "worth
playing any longer? We do not think it is Tho
people of Hawaii realize now as never before that
it is not. From the year 1(J0! the future will date
an awakening fatal to Japanese domination in Ha

Rioters In
Ugly Mood
Makino Says Sheriff would
have been Killed.
Honolulu1, July 21. heriff .Tar
rett was told by Fred Makino last
Saturday night that if he had re
sisted the Waimanalo Japanese
mob he would never have left the
plantation alive. This statement
was made by the head of the
"Higher Wage'' Association in
Judge Robinson's court, while a
verdict in the riot cases was being
awaited.
Makino twitted J arret with hav
ing being alarmed by the attitude
of the Japanese, and admitted that
the Waimanalo lot were pretty
tough, Jarrett saying that the
several hundred at Waimanalo
were far worse than the couple of
thousand at Waipahu.
"It's a good thing for you you
didn't fiticiw fiL'ht or null a revol
ver," said Makino. "If you had
done anything of this sort,
would have never have left
place alive."
After making this statement to
the head of the local police Makino
added that at a word from him the
rioters would have been quiet.
.Turret addressed Makino as
"Mikado," and in answer to Ma
kino's intimations that Janet had
been badly scared, Jarrctt said
"It's a long lane that has no turn

to Mikado Makino by a Star man
present: 1011 say the rioters
would all have quit at a word from
you, did you control them to put
them up to it ?"
Mikado Makino indulged in a
Rohertsonian burst of silence.
