GOVERNOR HARRISON.
Governor-General Harrison was
received here and duly wined and
dined. I am informed that the De
mocratic gathering was small and
select, but the absence of numbers
had no effect upon Mr. Harrison.
The impression made by him on
the public was such as to inspire
the afternoon paper to express the
wish that he might like the place
well enough to remain here and fill
the executive chair; a polite com
pliment and a graceful one. Hono
lulu has the reputation among the
atrical people of being the coldest
and most exacting of any in Ame
rica but, when the same people who
witness a play are called upon to
officiate as committeemen in receiv
ing a distinguished person, the en
thusiasm is boundless. Shame it is
that the bulk cannot be divided so
the actors would get a share
BAG LUCK.
Many Maui people will recall the
death, by accidental shooting.'of a
son of Captain Dcrger some years
ago. It was during a goat-hunting
party iu the Waianae mountains
when, in going down a trail his gun
went off accidentally and the shot
killed him. That must have been
ten or twelve years ago, and it now
comes time to record the death of a
brother by a motorcycle accident at
Knpiolani Park this evening. The
details are meagre at this writing,
but it seems some of those who are
to go into the race tomorrow were
at practice. Berger had been racing
and was beaten in practice. He
then started for home and rode
recklessly and ran into a street car
and was killed. Th's should lie
sufficient endorsement of the stand
taken by The Advertiser relative to
races of this character on Regatta
Day. It seems to the average mind
a class of sport that may well be
dispensed with for there is a maxi
mum of danger nt all time. Even
here in Honolulu, where more than
two hundred are on the streets
every day, and the drivers are ex
pected to pay some attention to tin
speed laws, there are accident and
pedestrians are in quite as much
danger from being bumped by a
motorcycle as an automobile.
STRANGE CASH.
The body of a stranger was found
half submerged in the sand at Waf
kiki near the lighthouse yesterday
afternoon and up to this writing has
not been identified. His name may
beJIerman Anyz or linindt, there
isO) telling, but from the fact that
thf letter "A" is embroidered on
hi.Vmirt and the name as given
alxlo is in his watch, would in
dicile that Anyz is about right. A
suggestion is made in the papers
that it may be only one of a num
ber of aliases as the laundry mark
is "G 813." There was no money,
but a money order payable to Anyz
for a few cents was found. Possibly
today developments may come that
will clear the atmosphere. It is
barely possible, inasmuch as the
pistol has not been located, that the
man may have been shot on a
steamer entering port and that the
body floated ashore. '
DEMOCRATS PEEVED.
There is a rumor this morning
that the democrats of Honolulu are
so peeved at Wilson for his actions
re-appointments to office hero that
they did not turn out to do honor
to Governor-General Harrison. The
biggest crowd at the reception was
formed by tho alumnus of Old Eli,
tho democrats being much in the
minority, as democrats. Harrison
did not know the difference and
was as well pleased as if the crowd
had been made up entirely of demo
crats, the fact that Banana Jack
and a half dozen others were all
who responded to tho call of Chair
man Ashford was of no consequence.
Where ignorance is bliss it is folly
to be otherwise.

Judge Hayselden of Kait has
been visiting his cousin, Senator
Hayselden.
Company I was in camp, last
Saturday night.
The pupils and friends of St.
Cross school were pleasantly en
tertained at the Parish Hall last
Saturday evening. There were
games, music, dancing, apricot ice
cream and cakes.'
Mr. O. T. Boardman has tem
porarily engaged the rooms which
Inspector Raymond formerly oc
cupied. Colonel Blanche B. Cox of the
Salvation Army gave an excellent
address at Hale Aloha on Sunday
afternoon. She remarked that the
searchlight, or the ray of Divine
truth reveals the secrets of our
hearts. It may be a painful ex
perience, but religious joy will
come afterward. Col. Cox decrib
ed interesting scenes which she had
witnessed in Loudon, in the Far
East, and in a Honolulu hospital.
Miss Louisa Pratt is the new
principal of the Lahaina Kinder
garden. She formerly taught in
Paia.
Miss Lucy Adams has returned
from Honolulu, and work has been
resumed at the Baldwin House.
Manager Freeland has favored
the Lahaina public with splendid
pictures at the Pioneer Theatre
this week. The patriotic drama of
"Sheridan's Ride" was the attrac
tion on Monday evening; and Helen
Gardner's magnificent picture
play of "Cleopatra" was presented
on Tuesday evening.
