THE MAUI NEWS, FRIDAY, JUNE 2: 1916.
AT THE THEATERS
a
THE ORPHEUM AND
LYCEUM CIRCUITS
The attractions at the theatres
under this management offer some ex
cellent jircgrams for the coming week.
Including that widely read novel, "The
Little White Sister." The following is
a review of some of the features. See
another column for dates.
Lou-Tellegen, Dorothy Davenport
and Theodore Roberts are the trio of
stars who come to the Orpheum and
Lyceum theatres in "The Unknown,"
another big Lasky feature, based on
"The lied Mirage," a thrilling novel
from the pen of I. A. R. Wylie. With
this set of stars there should be some
thing doing in the line of high dram
atics.
This will be Lou-Tellegen's second
appearance in the silent drama, and
like his first offering, "The Explorer,''
the favorite of two continents is east
in a role which takes him to "No
Man's Land," just beyond civiliza
lion's farthest edge. Lou-Tellegen is
cast as Richard Farquar, an English
man, who had lived in anticipation of
receiving a fortune but is left penni
less through disinheritance and finds
himself In a British army post just
beyond the edge of the desert. lie is
a soldier a soldier of fortune hav
ing assumed a name for the purpose
of joining the army. He meets and
loves a young American girl and (he
colonel of his regiment loves the same
girl.
Nancy saves Farquar from a pun
ishment which he does not merit and
in retaliation for the treatment that Is
mete out to him by Colonel Destinn
(Theodore Roberts) she elopes with
him. It developes that the young sol
dier and his colonel are bound by ties
of blood and the ending is of "the
happy-ever-after" kind.
Viola Allen, for years a famous act
ress of the legitimate stage, and Rich
ard C. Travers, silent drama's fore
most actor, come to the Orpheum and
Lyceum theatres as co-stars in "The
White Sister," the dramatization of F.
Marion Crawford's novel of that name.
Miss Allen starred for a long time in
the legitimate production. In the
film presentation she was given the
strongest supporting cast money could
obtain and this has been combined
with some remarkable feats of motion
photography.
An idea of the strength of the cast
may be gained from the fact that Er
nest Maupaln, who takes the role of
Dr. Fieri, was for years Sarah Bern
hardt'a, leading man. Sydney Ains
worth, whom Maui picture fans know
and appreciate, John Thorn, Camille
D'Arcy, John Cossar, Thomas Cum
merford and Frank Dayton take the
remaining principal parts.
A novel introduction to the story is
SHOWER FOR BRIDE-TO-BE
Saturday afternoon, the friends of
Miss Alice Walker, tendered her a
linen shower at the home of D. C.
Lindsay, Pala. Miss Walker is soon
to be a bride, and was the recipient of
many tangible evidences as to the
esteem and love with which she is re
garded. The teachers of Maui High
School and her school girl friends
were among those present.

structure. It enjoys "cool mountain
breezes", baths, dumb waiters, a lawn,
a roadway with hibiscus hedge and a
gallows. This will be Mollina's home

some soft-hearted executive pardons
him. Ho should have been introduced

parently without human agency, pre
sents Its back with the title of the
book, turns around and opens the
frontispiece, showing a full length pic
ture of Viola Allen. Miss Allen Is
then seen to step right out of the page
in diminutive form and Increase to

to the audience and the play is on.
Made-in-America films, with Betty
Nansen, royal Danish actress, In the
stellar roles are among the big win
ners of the Fox Film Corporation's
product ions. "Anna Karenina," a Fox
offering, featuring Betty Nansen, the
work of the celebrated Russian. Count
Leo Tolstoi, is among the strongest
works of Tolstoi and is. to date, Miss
Nansen's second and best offering to
the screen.
The story of Anna is as old as time,
but is told in the inimitable style of
Count Tolstoi and true to life, even
to the end when the noblewoman has
forsaken home, child and position for
the love of a young army officer and
learns that he is false she takes the
course that has been taken by numer
ous of her unfortunate sisters and
seeks solace in death.
"The Cheat," the photo-dramatic
offering that has caused wide com
ment in Honolulu, as elsewhere, will
be shown at the Orpheum and Lyceum
theatres, the home of Paramount pic
tures." Fannie Ward and Sessue Ila-
yakawa, in the leading roles, do some
exceptionally fine screen acting.
The subject of "The Cheat" is not
a new one in dramatics, with the pos
sible exception that it is rather a nov
elty to have the "affair" between a
white woman a Japanese. The plot
is a new version of the old "triangle."
The woman, a typical social butterfly,
is living beyond the means of her
hard-working husband and in order to
cover her losses at. cards she invests
a trust fund of $10,000 it was intend
ed for the Belgians in a stock that
proves worthless; she loses the money
and when exposure faces her she ap
neals to the Japanese for aid. He gives
the aid, but strikes a "bargain." The
woman is to visit him in his rooms the
following evening. She does, but in
the meantime has secured the $10,000
from her husband and comes to repay
the money, not. to keep her side of the
'bargain." Infuriated, the Japanese
brands the woman with an iron brand.
She shoots him and escapes. Her hus
band is accused of the crime, tried and
found guilty. Then comes the thrill
ing climax in which the woman con
fesses to the shooting and in justifica
tion she exhibits the brand. The
crowded courtroom is soon a seething
mob, bent on the destruction of the
Japanese. It is one of the most
thrilling mob scenes ever screened.
