"The Soul of Broadway" I

In the most amazinc photo-drama ever
produced. Briefly, the story concerns
the life of La Valencia, a typicak
woman of the New York stage, wond
erfully beautiful but old In sin.
Her lover (portrayed by William E.
Shay), becomes a thief that he may
shower luxuries upon her. He Is
sentenced to prison and for five
years eats his heart out In solitAide,
to emerge at the end of that time a
sad-faced, gray-haired man, entirely
cured of his mad Infatuation.
By accident Valencia sees him.
Her old passion for him is revived. It
means nothing to her that since his
release from prison he has fallen in
love, and married a good woman.
She tries to win him back. When
her fascinations fail, she threatens to
expose his past life. He will not
yield and she prepares to carry out
her threat. Then Destiny takes a
hand and with cliinateric suddenness
and power, the end comes.
"The Selfish Woman"
It is seldom that a bride is cast in
a role, either in book, play or film,
that calls for her to endeavor to
completely wreck the life's work of
her young husband. However, such
picture is presented at the Maui
theaters. It is a Jesse L. Lasky feat
ure entitled "The Selfish Woman,"
and it stars Cleo Ridgely id Wallace
Beid both leading lights in the forces
of Lasky.
Lasky frequently sends over the
Paramount Picture service a strong
drama but it is seldom that there is
offered anywhere in Maui a drama of
the strength and force boasted by
"The Selfish Woman."
The story deals with engineering
in the Far West, as the States be
yond the Mississippi river are famili
arly known throughout the East. The
hero is engaged on a gigantic proposi
tion which interferes with certain
plans laid down by his father. The
father endeavors to call a halt but is
unsuccessful. He then turns to the
young wife of his son, a woman with
a desire for everything that money

The story deals with Ethel Cart
wright, memeber of the New York
smart set, whose sister is accused of I
a crime. To clear her sister Ethel '
agrees to become a special agent for
the U. S. customs service. She is
placed on the track of a man who is
visiting her home, who is accused of
smuggling a valuable necklace and
with whom she is in love. The man,
Steven Denby, is in love with Ethel
hut knows he is under suspicion and
that she is on his trail. Circumstances
compel him to fight the girl and to
act in a manner that arouses her sus
picions. The climax shows Steven to be a
high and secret offlcial of the secret
service whose emulation of a smuggl
er has bee with the idea of trapping
crooked agents. He is successful and
both Steve and Ethel are happy.
"Hesper of the Mountains"
Born and bred to every luxury, a
sweet, cultured girl of the East is
forced to go to the rugged and untam
ed West.
Bored by the people, their simple
ways, their blunt roughness and
primitive living, she is most unhappy.
B-Jt in the turmoil of a labor up
rising, when the tests of manhood
stand supreme, the realization comes
to her that the West breeds men of
iron, unpolished perhaps, but who in
moments of peril stand like towers
of strength.
From this awakening,, her hate
develops into interest which later
melts into wholesome love.

Notice is hereby given that, on
October 12, 1909, the Wailuku Rice
Company, Limited, a corporation, e
rculod and delivered unto the First
National B.mk of Wailuku, or order,
its promissory note for the sum of
Fifteen Hundred Dollars, payable six
months after date, with interest from
date until paid at the rate of ten per
cent per annum; securing the pay
ment of said note by the execution
and delivery to said Bank of a mort
gage of even date, covering the per
sonal property hereinbelow in this
notice described; said mortgage prov
iding that, in the event of the non
payment of the debt secured thereby,
the mortgagee might sell or other
wise dispose of said property at either
public auction or private sale, and
from the. proceeds of sale pay all
costs and charges, the principal and
interest, due on said note, rendering
the surplus, if any, to the mortgagor.
Notice is therefore given that, be
cause of the non-payment of a portion
of the principal and interest due and
unpaid on the above mentioned note,
the First National Bank of Wailuku
