well. It was the first time that she
has taken nn Important part In the
Choral Club operas, and her many
friends were frankly surprised at her
versatility. Her voice was good as
wan also her actijig.
Mrs. Jones, as "Josephine" sang In
her usual finished manner, and her
well known histrionic ability never
showed to better advantage on a Maui
.-,tage.
It would he hard to Imagine a bet
ter "S!r Joseph Porter" than Mr.
Sioggett whose work kept the audience
'n a gale of laughter pratically all the
ime he was on the stage. It was not
'imply that the part is funny Mr.
.-'loggett made it more funny.
David Rattray, whose excellent
;eiior voice is well known to Maui
.uulience, took the part of "Ralph
Unokturaw" in masterly fashion.
Miss Oriet Robinson, who played
Tom Tucker, "midshipmate", made a
ig hit with a hornpipe which she
lanced: while Mis. J. C. Fitzgerald,
). C. Lindsay, and E. O. Horn who had
speaking parts" did their full part
towards making the production the
success it was.
The big chorus of the first Lord's
sisters, cousin, aunts, the sailor, mar-
Lies, etc: was composed of the mem

Much of the clever effect of the
opera was due to the admirable stage
-ntting, which represented, of course,
the deck of the ship Pinafore. The
scenery was all specially made for the
occasion, being the work of Brother
Frank, of Wailuku,. Many compli
mentary remarks were heard concern
ing the fidelity with which the work
had been done.
. Music was supplied by the following
' well known Maui musicians Mies
Mary Hoffmann, piano; Mrs. H. W.
Baldwin and Miss Clark, organ; C. D.
L-ufkin, cornet; and F. N. Lufkin, cello.
Future Entertainments Planned
The Choral Club is already plann
ing for future, musical events, the
first of which is to be a minstrel show.
This will be given within the next two
months, probably. Later the club
plans to produce the opera "The
-Serenade," by .Victor Herbert.
A feature which elicited much favor
able comment, was the handling of the
program advertising. Special atten
tion was called to.each. individual ad
vertisement from the platform and
.he audience was Invited to fill out in
losed cards for various articles ad
vertised. Later these were collected
nd sent to the proper fifms. It was
nnounced that over 10 percent of the
udienee retunel the cards with
df-rs at the time, and a considerable
.umber of others later. ' Naturally the
I'lvertisements mostly answered were
.hose offering specific articles. The
'logram was handled by Mrs. A. C.

history, just make your preference
known, and books treating on the sub
ject will be forwarded to you. It is
the same with all subjects.
Besides the home libraries, the de
partment furnishes school libraries.
Books for schools and communities
may be retained for three mouths.
For both school and community pur
poses sixty-five books are sent in each
box. It is evident that for school pur
poses the books are located at one of
the schools centrally situated, and are
in charge of a librarian who performs
the same function, in a lesser degree,
that are performed in a large library.
In the case of a community library
the books are located in a store, a
Wank or a private residence. But the
place selected must in every case be
centrally located and on a main road.
Among some of the places that are
served by the traveling library are the
Palama Settlement, the Japanese Y.
M. C. A., Kohala, Lihue, Wailuku, Ha
nalei, Kapaa, Eleele, Hamakuapoko
and Kealia.
The traveling library also maintains
a branch on Midway Island and fur
nishes books for the cable steamer,
which goes to the island four times a
year. Advert iser.
