IN THE FIELD OF SCOUTDOM
Chicago Chii-iiKO Stoutcraft ior
January is certainly full of Mood
things and they aie to be congratu
lated on the splendid paper and the
fine work they are uct'OiuplishinR for
the men of tomorrow. Among the big
tilings Is that of securing Dr. J I. Y.
Hurl as their executive. He is a
prominent social worker of many
years standing, has been president of
many colleges. For the past year and
a. half eh was with the national ollic"
at New York. He is the editor of
the Scoutmasfc'r'B Hand Book and is
at present editing a hand book for
scout cyecul ives. The biggest and
best is none too good for Chicago.
Here are sonic tilings front the
Chicago Scoutcraft :
A Word For the Teacher
There are a great many other
things I would do differently if I
were going through school again. Here
is just one 1 would like to mention:
I'd be a little more considerate of the
teachers. There is once in a while an
onery one, 1 admit, but on the average
they are it mighty nice, patient, friend
ly, helpful lot of girls They work
hard, get none too much pay and
even less appreciation, and do lis a
great deal of good. From the Save
Scouts in Hoys' Life for September.
New Year Resolutions, 1921
I shall attend every troop meeting
during the year. 1 will try to make
my troop the best.
Alameda Test Requirements
Alameda California the old home
of your commissioner has gotten out
the most complete little folder on
rules and regulations for requirements
that it has ever been my good fortune
to get hold of. It is complete from
tenderfoot to Kagle Scout tests and
contains all the required forms for
the signing of test examiners, scout
master and the court of honor also a
place for t he scout membership card.
Some booklet; congratulations Alame
da. You certainly have growed.
TROOP DOINGS
The Church of Jesus Christ of the
Latter Day Saints is now in the scout
ring and organizing a troop of scouts.
President L Wesley Smith of Hono
lulu while on a visit to Maui had a
talk with the commissioner and stated
to him that he ahd spoken to Mr.
Jones ii -king him to organize a troop
at once. John Waiwaiole will act as
scoutmaster.
Tests
Scouts Saida and Takemolo have
been passing their second class first
aid work and the examiner sayg that
the work of these scouts is far above
Ihe average. Saida passed his knifo
and hatchet test and the work of
sharpening the axe is something to
be proud of.
Spreckelsville
The Spreckelsville scouts are pro
gressing in first class shape and are
rapidly passing the tenderfoot tests.
J. M. L'rown, scoutmaster of the troop
is deeply interested in the work.
Puukolii
The work at. I'uukolii is getting un
der way and Mr. Cockett principal of
the school will assist in putting the
troop on its feet. It is hoped that Mr.
Shaw will also take a hand in the
troop doings.
Lahaina
As usual a big showing is being
uade by that troop. On Thursday
light 23 scouts greeted the commis
sioner as he entered the armory. The
roop is fortunate in having a fine
cheery room for a meeting place, and
.lie use of the armory for drilling and
antes. Watch them go.
Makawao
Today E. H. Jones will take formal
charge of the troop as scoutmaster.
It is a splendid boost for scouting
when a man of his type takes up the
work and it is sincerely hoped that
more men of his type will get Into the
work.

WHO HAS YOURS?
Scoutmasters
Here is what we want and we want
them at once. We have the boys, hun
dreds of them are waiting to get into
the movement, but we have to keep
them waiting for the want of scout
masters. Do not make the old worn
out excuse that you are too busy,
haven't the lime, etc. (let into the
harnes-s and help us make Americans.
This is just as much a call on duly as
ever your country put upon you.
Subs Not Submarines
Come on Scouts. The scout knives
are going last, (let in your subscrip
tions to the Maui News and get one
of these hue new scout knives before
they are all rone. The fellow that

Attitude of Senator
Baldwin is Commended
op-Ihe
I!y a vote of 8 to 7. with all of
Maui's senators recorded in the nega
tive, the territorial senate endorsed
'and Recommended Delegate J. K.
Kalanianaole for governor. Senator
Iialdwin speaking against the resolu
tion said it was presumption on the
part of the legislature to seek to
dictate to the President on appoint
ment of an executive. Senator Hire
opposed on the ground that Kalania
naole was not best suited for the
office.
Commenting editorially on the
position of Senator Iialdwin to
resolution The Advertiser said:
"Well taken indeed was Senator
Baldwin's stand yesterday in objec
tion to the concurrent resolution en
dorsing Delegate Kuhio Kalanianaole
for the governorship.
"The objection of the senator from
Maui was based upon the ground that
the territorial legislature is a legisla
tive and not a political organization,
and that no provision is made in the
Organic Act for the lawmaking body
of the Territory to offer advice to the
President of the United States The
President-elect has not asked us for
our endorsement of a man to succeed
Governor McCarthy, and whether we
are unanimous or otherwise, I do not
believe it is proper lor us to go on
record as a legislative body, Senator
iialdwin said. And he was quite rit'ht.
"It was presumptuous of the legis
lature to put itself on record as en
dorsing any candidate. We do not
say that it did not have as much right
to endorse Delegate Kalanianaole as
anyone lesn; but in giving nedorse
ment to anyone it took a step that, to
say the least, was ill advised.
"The resolution is worded in langu
age that is untrue. It mentions Del
egate Kalanianaole as the choice of
the people. No matter how popular
the Prince may be and far be it from
us to even intimate that he is not very
popular personally it cannot be deni
ed that there is a most decided oppo
sition to him for Governor of Hawaii,
and those who drafted the resolution
were well aware of that opposition.
Fortunately, the legislature's action
will carry very little weight, but what
weight it does carry should be based
upon truth, and it is anything but the
truth to designate Kuhlo as teh choice
of the people."

OBITUARY
SISTER BEATRICE
After more than half a century of
usefulness in the education of Ha
waii's girlhood during which she left
the mark of her personal influence up
on the characters of hundreds of wo
men, Sister Beatrice of St. Andrew's
Priory passed away last Saturday at
the advanced age of 92 years.

Queen Emma, were desirous of having
established a school for girls and in
answer to his request Sister Beatrice
accompanied by Miss Sellon, Eldress

Women of two generations and girls
of a third, from every Island of the

of the friend of their schoolgirl days,
the woman of beautiful character they
loved and admired.
