JOSEPH H. GRAY EDITOR TUESDAY MAY 23, 1922 TRY IT ON CONGRESS From nil parts of Hawaii coiiu complaints that tho Territory is not being accorded by congress the same rights as are other parts of the United States, is taxed as are the states but is deliberately excluded when the benefits of taxation are passed out to the various commonwealths. Delegate l'.aldwin is quoted in Washington special dispatches as saying that he sees little or no hope of Hawaii being included in the distribution of educational or road building funds at this session but there may be more chance of success at the next. If he cajinot secure a recognition of Hawaii's rights there is not a man in the Islands who can do so. When a person cannot get what he wants one way Hiulj de termined to secure his rights, lie tries another. If regular channels do not produce the results he seeks he tries Oilier and unusual chan nels. That method is open to Hawaii. Maui News believes it will be admitted that money could not be expended to better advantage than in securing for Hawaii' full recognition that its rights are equal to and identical with those of the states of the Union except as restricted by the Federal Constitu tion and the laws in regard thereto. If a man wants a house for himself and his family and does not find one readily, he advertises. If he wants a clerk, he advertises. If the housewife wants a cook, she advertises. Advertising is used t aid in meeting the wants in every day life which suggests: "Why not trr-ifon congress?" Hawaii is a Territory, an integral part of the United States, and as such en titled with the states to a proportionate shareof pub lic funds distributed among them. WAmHOUSKKlUSTVGO-LTD, HONOLULU. PINES IN HANA It was good news for. liana jand for all of Maui, since what) lienefits one district of thi Islandibenefits all, that Maui News pub-j lished last week. The "establishment of a pineapple cannery there! M ill mean -wonder for the district and is fraught with possibilities! of still further good. It will drahv an added population, will fur-1 nish work in the field and in the. plant, work means wages and wages mean business for all the merchants, large and small. The project spells a splendid revival for liana district, points to the greatest' prosperity it has ever known. Fields under cultivation and made productive are of more value to the entire community. The more productive they become the greater their worth to the territory and. the .county as well as the district. Increased business in one. district extends its benefits to the territorial and the county governments and to business in the Is lands. So congratulations cannot be confined to liana but extend to all Maui and all Hawaii. The project will be more far reaching in its effect than appears at first glance. With a large and nourishing industry added to its. other resources, liana will not be satisfied with its isolation, Central Maui business houses will not be satisfied to see trade sent irom Haua. to Honolulu, passing on the Kilauea- right by their door. They will not be satisfied with once a week transportation facilities. They will want to get to Hana when and whenever the occnsTorf jnises. That means they will demand a road. The announcement of the starting of the pine industry in the Hana district puts the belt road proposal, the extension of the road from Kailua on, in a different light and will create a demand for it that has not been heard before. It may not come this year but an impetus to the movement for it comes out of the plans that were told last Friday. You can- ; Jgifei L depentoBlii .this ' ..
