The Compromise bill is now no doubt
n the hands of the President. His signa
ture is all that is necessary to make it a
'aw. lienee the people oi this whole
country art* again at sea, politically. So
far as wo know all that has been gained
s the defeat of Qrant's purpose, frequent
ly declared to use the array to Install his
successor, whom he was as free to allege
would be Hayes. He had also gone so
tar as to say the President of the Senate
would ''count*' the rotes necessary to give
Hayes 185, without regard to what the
House of Representatives would do.
Thus entirely getting aside the power
of the House, which undoubtedly is the
body under the constitution and by usage
which has the power to say when there
has been an election and when there lias
been a failure to elect. We are at peace:
but we are not at rest; nor do we know
v» hat will lie the result of the work of the
v ommission of fifteen. Wecan only hope
for the best.

the House ha\e already called a caucus

forto-momm at 11, to name, then rep

part of the Honse, and the Democrats
will probably meet on Monday to name
theirs.
A precisely similar- movement is on
foot in the Serrate to substitute Morton

the caucus majority is against the bill.
Kerry is anxious to liavcÿt caucus, asd oue
will probably be called Monday with the
chance that the majority w hich passed

the commission undent. The Democarts
will hold no caucus and elect Thurman

Should the conference committee be
abandoned, Randolph Tucker is tolerably
certain to be named, as would McMahon
of Ohio. Field is more likely to be of
counsel than a member of the commis

extremely likely to he chosen,
friends of Wood and Cox are pressing
them for the position, it appears to be à
