GERMANT AND ITALY (SUDDENLY BAR THE .DARDANELLES TO ENGLAND. Will Brits n Save the Turk? Russia's Progress in Roumelia. London, Jan. 14, 1878. A crisis in the East is near at band. The situation has become greatly com plicated within the past few boars. Italy and Germany bave suddenly brought England face to face with a new issue more startling to her people than any event since the beginning of tbe war. The Standard's Constantinople cor respondent states that, the Frince of Keus8, the German Minister, and Count Corti, the Italian Minister, informed the Porte that if It permits the British fleet to come to Constantinople Germany and I aly will also demand permission for their fleets to pass through the Dardan elles. MORE THAW A TRIPLE ALLIANCE. 2he unquestioned dominance of Rus sia In the field has forced England to order her fleet from Malta to its old chorage in Besika Bay with the presumed intention of entering the Dardanelles at an early day. Germany [and Italy sud* deuly declare that they have interests in the East as well as the Britons. Per haps Spain, having a tolerable navy, may have something to say. At any rate the the action or the Ger man and Italian governments is unequiv ocal. Bismarck's policy is made clearer to tbe world. He is determined that England shall not perform acts really warlike unless she arrays herself before tbe world as Russia's open enemy. She shall not goto Gallipoli except as au ac tive ally of the Turk. The importance of the action of these two powerful na tions cannot be exaggerated, den reappearance of Italy as a Mediter ranean Power indicates that the govern ment ot King Humbert I, Is disposed to assert Italy's claims to a Controlling in fluence in Eastern politics. THl CAUSE OF GERMANY'S ACTION. A despatch from Malta announces that Vice Admiral Hornby has sailed for the Levant on the Iron-clad, steamer Sultan. The iron-clads Devastation, Achilles and Alexandra, and the frigate Raleigh preparing to follow. The force in dock yard is working till eight o'clock every Eight. The troop ship Jumna, homeward bound from India, with 1,067 men, is detained at Malta. The Eu phrates, outward bound, with 1,142 men, Is also detained there. The Grand Duke Nicholas telegraphed to St. Petersburg from Gabrova yesterday as follow«:— 1 "1 have arrived here and await further intelligence from General Radetaky. To-morrow (Monday) I cross the Balkans. Ten thousand prisoner» ar rived here, and are being despatched to various destinations. South of tfie JiaUcana, "Karzolf, afier clearing the Gyopsa Val ley of Turks, despatched a column toward Ka lofer and has occupied Kilssura, where he nnlted the detachments of hi*» division coming from nlalltza and Teteven. Gener al Gourko has occupied Ikbtiman," Jeni-Hciffhra Captured. A Constantinople despatch reports that . the Russians enteied Jeni-Baghra on Saturday. Tue place was previously burned by the retreating Turks Adrianople Cannot be Defended. A Vienna correspondent telegraps the following:—"Advices from Turkey show that the works of Adrianople are ouly partially armed and unfitted to resist an attack. In Constantinople it is believed possible that Adrianople may be carried by a coup de main." THE CAPITAL NO BETTER DEFENDED. The formications of Constantinople are nsequently being looked to a* a last sort, although they seem to be In even a worse condition. Everything points to the complete confusion and dismay of the Turks._ Parents eannot be too careful in guard ing the health of their babies.
