JANUARY «IB. 18T» Jcdoi O'Bbibn, of Philadelphia, died last night «Jour Blackmhiim»*', ahowed up the unreliability and duplicity of the îb'ery Evening and Commercial yesterday In » convincing communication in that paper, iu which he took occasion to speak a tieserving word of the «article of "J. T. H." on silver remonetisation. We hope every reader of the Gaxette will peruse the extra*!* from the speeches, of Senators Oockrell and Jones on the silver question in another column. These gentlemen come up to the standard of Statesmen with pure arguments; and prove conclusively that the financial system established 1 by Hamilton and Jef ferson and reaffirmed by Ja^ksop, Ben ton and Van Buren— the double staudard basis of gold ami silver—is not only the safest and best; but the only one suited to the extensive agricultural regions and, the di growing Republic. Old Mr. Randolph, of New Jersey, made a speech in the U. S. Senate on Wednesday in favor of th«* gold-grabbers. It was, as usual, an uphill business^ and sounded for all the world, like theisffbrt of anattorney beforeCourt when he knows he has a had case, and does not get enough pay. If the old fellow had told the truth he might have been excused* However, the Jersey Democracy will make short work of him when they fully understand this question and how he has talked upon it. The difficulty has been that the bondholders own or have bribed nearly all the northern newspapers and the people are misinformed, or kept in Ignorance of the truth. _ An Utterance' Eloquent with Trith.— In the Senate yesterday, the Ohio Senator, who now deserves th<* sou briquet given to John Quincy Admits In the House more than any one else —the old man eloquent—uttered a great truth in a very few words; the single gold standard men will find it out to their regret because of the ignorance df general finances. It is as follows : Mr. Thurman said be had never iridul any remarks as to who held the government bo mis. IS o matter who held them they had the right to be paid. He argued that the remonetisation of silver would place it side ,by side with gold in less thtfn twenty-four hours, and no in justice woukl lie done to any one. of K' 'i i All the money centres are complain ing of uu excess of loanable funds at ex tremelylow rates.— Ledger. That may be so ; and if it were not that States rights were stricken down by Radical legislation, now being made to subserve sectional interests, the money might stay in those centres. If it were not for the ten per eent. tax on State bank notfi^ hundred* of wealthy gentle men wMffgd into the banking brodness through charters from State legislatures a solid gold and silver basis, and good money would be had without looking to money centre* in tlie great cities. Radical legislation has put the people in the dition of the Yankee who had traveled iu Texas and declared that land was low that he coqld have bought a large farm for a "pair of l^optg." you buy a fanu, then?" 4 reason in the wofM^nak) the fellow ; '>1 had'nt the p air of ftpots/ ' G it E a * TH (NCif J Expected irf M r. But hi» speech in the Senate yesterday ing afialr. even undertake to assure his fellow Sena tors that silver hail a Quality imparted to it by the Creator, much less to prove to the contrary. There is one tiling certain, that the constituents of Mr. Lamar have a right to protect themselves from such injury as results from misrepresentation, and when a man deserts his people ami their interests, as he proposes to do in voting against tie remonetization of silver, after they have formally Instruct ed him, they slvould claim the right to enter their protest and impose a sentence of revocation, whether that be effective or not. The Yankee Senators I * "Why didn't 'For the beat •as a weak and trili lt proved nothing ; it did uot rer de sert their jicojile —they have managed to outwit anti overreach in every way. Rove mu Coaunirtipner Raum, iu a re ported convemadon, mention* one aspect of the income tax question that I* worth oouaideriug. Hie unconxdtutioiialltT, the otliout* tlittcrimluotiou and the injuntlee of tho tax are familiar to than« who have « ■»«far ed from It, and 'were pointed ont anew by us In a recent editorial. It is no good excuse for reviving that detestable inquisition to say that it would yield a large and sure revenue to the Govern ment. This is a plea which had g mente often make for the Impose URjust and unpopular taxes, bat it cannot be made In behalf of the inoome tax, save Commissioner Kaum. He is right. The times have changed since this species of tax was In successful force. The incomes which then paid so handsomely to the collector have shrank away, Host of the men who were rich ten veam ago are pope to-day. Probably not a third of the revenue ooukl now I» derived from the same income tax that Money being less easily earned now than then—and the future not very encour aging—men would be more tempted to limite false reports of Income returns. TJiere would be more collusion with Fed eral oflloers, more bribery and more favoritism. It would be newssarv to in crease the forer of assessors and collectors In order to execute the law. This is an objection to tlie tax which does not seem to nave occurred to Commissioner Raum. It Is an impurtiaiit one. Htnoe the aboli tion of «Us tax In 1373, the revenue de partment has been able to retrench great ly. it has consolidated districts, dis charged hundreds of men, ami saved a C at «leal of money to the Treasury. All costly machinery, of which we are well rid, would be set in motion aval » if the income tax were re-eatahlish cil. Truly, aa the Commissioner decares, "the game woukl not Is) worth the can dle." Adding to these objections the likelihood that the tax woukl be p Bounce«! unconstitutional and void ever «anted to the Supreme Court of the United States, we have a chain of reason* which should re-strain any prudent Con gsess from votiig;an inoome tax. While all husiuees is uusettlcd ami the future eo dark, it would be foolish indeed to make radical «X pertinents in financiering. Buch would is, a serious reduction of the taxes on whiskey and tohacoo—wbiuh are not demand««! by any consuiners, and by only a few of the producers and dealen — and a reversion to the income tax in the hope of making up a part of the loss from the other sources of revenue. Thia would be giving up a very uncertain one in the bush—an ex change which does not please Commis sioner Kaum or any other man of sense. _ ov*rn lion of •o Î ly u levied In 1870.
