Tlie illu mination must have proved a grand suc Tue New York «Sun say* the oil mon opoly, called the Standard Oil Company, of Pa., divides a million dollars a month in profits. It ie said these profits ure di vide«l between less Ilian a score of per sons. The editor o! tlie Republican would not only teach ns politics, but give us a leKsonin epistolary correspondence. That is all very well, one should never be too old to learn ; but does he not know that brevity is the soul of wit, and In official matters may als«> be reckoned the soul of wisdom. In conformity to tlie usual custom aud to the popular will, Governor Coch ran has appointed tlie 28tk instant as a day of general thanksgiving. Surely we ought to be willing, and we have no doubt our people are ready to offer thanks tor the bountiful gibs of j wise Providence. If silver is cheap what is to prevent Mr. Sherman from coining the whole greenback circulation. If we had about three or four hundred millions of silver in the Treasury much ;ts France and England. It would afford a sure basis for as much paper : and make exactly the currency which tl*e Delaware platform calls for. alb would only have 4s Wp. expect tlie Democrats «»f Loulsi ana, Florida and South Carolina to altdr Return Hoard la« th ma«le by tlie Radical State Legislatures. But we pre stune the Returning Hoards are now ex Ing their right to throw out enough votes to elect tlieir friends. The scream cn of Mr. Bisbee for I*. S. marshals has been heard all the way to Washington. Bnt Mr. Ilaycs would be the læst man we should suppose who w*ouhl go back on the* jjower of the Floritla "Return Hoard.'' Doub h»fts this Board will att rait they threw ont votes, an« I ask, "Wliat are you going to do about it ?" It is in vith the law by which you were fraudulently put into the President» tial chair. "What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gamier." Will our friends of the Republican have ns in Delaware enact a Florida Re publican Return Board law, or let our present laws remain ? We are for our -own laws ; but perhaps the Republicans would prefer the Florida statute. accordan«e The t:\PENsE of maiiatring city af fairs seem to have so greatly increased within tlie past ten or twelve years as to alarm property-holders. And this in crease has extended to cities in all parts of the country. Tlie small villages do not appear to have been so much affected by the prevailing rage for extravagance. The mischief hail its origin in the infla tion of the currency—or the immense paper issue by tlie General Government. It was a very pleasant thing to dispense patronage aud delightful to be informed of an increase of fifty or a hundred per -cent, in salaries. And while real estate aud personal property were booming up at the same rate of advance little care was given to economy. But we have now been on the ebb-tide for several years, and labor lias stink from tlie great war prices to what would seem to he bottom prices, and even small rents are hard to tie got ; hence high taxes on property is felt to he extremely hard, and their burden causes very general com plaint everywhere. It is not so easy to -discharge office-holders aud cut dowu -salaries, or to reduce the pay of Influen tial contractors to what they were before the war. Hence the continued complaint -.about extravagance. Before taxes are reduced, expenses must he reduced. That is a settled fact. And tlie latter must precede the former. In our own city the lighting of the streets and public build ings, it is said, cosh, tventy thousand dollars when it ought not to exceed ten thousand. Our public schools cost us too much money now. As compared with their cost before tlie inflation of prices, this i. glaringly apparent. The cost per capita is readily obtained by reference to tlia reports of the late Hon. Willard Hall, aud those made by the present Superin tendant. The increase of expenditures for teachers' salaries and for all otlieii purpose« is very great and could Ve large liUjetLif the Boaiil of Education ie»ijhline*to AtttWie deuuUd. e occasion. Thi« Board is to#fr* tly n#(l«tip4>fKen Äditt who«,.obligal ions as citizens rest rery lightly upon them, and who suffer their 'friendships to overcome their re sjionslbllltles to the public. It is to be hoped that t&p Board will see the n«e«w sity of revising its confie and Mitliv the expenditures until they come nearer to wliat they wtro is r capita in lfifffcS. Wo believe this shhuld he tlone, ami if our citizens were to Jake the trouble to jier sonally enjoin It upon the Hoard as a public duty, the members would willingly comply. They can have no personal ob ject in extravagance, but they want to be sure that they are following the dlctatea of well-defined public sentiment before they act iu this direction. of qu< Hard Timet fta IftlO.*/» People who complain ho much of the existing "hard time*''would do well to read the following from Beuton'l "Thirty Yearn' Recollection*." He says: "The year* of 1819 and 1820 were a per iod ofglopm and agony. No money— either gold or ttUv«r;no paper convertible into specie; no measure or «tan «lard of value left remaining.
