St. Martin, from ail that we can gather, is no better and no worse than Wells and Kellogg, or the rest of the villains that Sherman, Chandler, llayes A Co., used to rob Mr. Tilden of the office of Presi dent to which he was undoubtedly elected. In tiie election of Robert J. Rey nolds. £sq., Mate Treasurer, the Legis lature made an excellent choice. Mr. Reynolds is a gentleman of tine reputa tion. and we are qu te sure he w ill dis charge every duty of the responsible of fice to the letter. John F. Staats, w ho vas elected State Auditor at the same In the State time, is not so well knowj .v* a partisan, but we are told he is a gentleman of pleasant and affable man ners. and well qualified for the position. W. Fikk Townsend, Esq., certainly deserves more credit for confessing his drunkenness and promising to do better than he could hav* deserved had be at temped to prove his accusers charged him falsely and failed in accomplishing his doubt he would. We purpose, as hop« lie w ill now receive encouragement to maintain that sobriety he formerly so frequently demanded of others. Every vill now help to hold h m up. The extension of the water works is again to disturb the people of our much favored little city. We regret this. We had hoped there would lx a paus»i in the Water Department, after the Cool Spring reservoir was completed. We think this expectation one, especially as our city debt has just been heavily increased on this account. We are told the floating debt is now about one hundred and twenty thousand dollars id that it will he largely increased by the first of July. Pure water is a neces sity every one mast admit ; hut it is very questionable whether the water will ever be any purer, If the c ty permits it tol>e diluted with substances that are dangerous to health and life, and it is unlawful to be put into it. The city now has the power to prohibit all nuisances being put into the Brandywine, and it should ex ercise that power, and not evade duty and seek to enlarge taxation when there is no real necessity for it. We have no fault to find with the report of the Water Committee. They have only presented a new project to the city through the Council. It is for the people to determine whether they will agree to be run into debt for such a purpose at this time. We are in favor for a pause ; we believe our taxes are alieady too high and hoped to see the present Council endeavor to re duce them, or at least to retire to in crease them. Clark, Reeves ».v Go., with the Plio-nix Iron Company, ofthat place, 1 * tbe manufacture of bO.OOO,OUO pounds *fc*'.. for t lie if run girders, columns, brae N- v Volk Metropolitan Elevated rail re ad and its proposed extensit E ubth aii'l Ninth avenues to the Harlem river. In these times of slack industry a contract covering 40,000 tons of manu factured metal deserves to be more par ticularly chronicled. The Ph»i*uix Com pany concluded the contract in Novem ber, and has already been able to supply about 5.000 toms of the metal needed. The total quantity of iron needed, if manufactured into railroad iron of 50 pounds to the yard, would furnish rails to equip a road 400 miles loDg. The Fhu;nix Company, to complete this con-, alon trai-l, will be able to eite full work in 74 . . , , , -,vr . •> i night »ml d*y relay», to troiu 1, »<J0 to 2,- I 000 hands. The night gangs will work M|u j er t | ie cheerful glare of two of Brush's electric lighting machines. In regard to the method of construction of these new branches of the Metropolitan railroad, (and the simple fact of the speedy ex tentions proves tiie success of the plan,) we learn that it will be placed in the centre of all streets over 55 feet in width from curb to curb, leaving space for car riages on each aide, anil with space un derneath the elevated track for a double track street railw ay. Where the street is less than 55 feet between curl»«, the columns will be placed on the edge of the sidewalk, and the girders will span the street, leaving the roadway entirely unobstructed. The columns on which the girders are to rest, will average in height about 10 feet, the shortest being 12 feet and the longest over 50 feet ; these e to be pi act'd where the ground is depressed, so as to carry llie toad on a level. All the iron used in constructing these roads Is required to stand a test o! 50,000 pounds to the square inch, ami the iron for the rivets must stand 00,000 to the square inch, and the stretch before break!ug 15 per ceut.
