of ing for ing ing THIRD EDITION THE UUI8UTVBE. Specially reported for the Gazette. ) Dover, Del., March 12, 1870. TI1K SENATE. The Senate met at 10 o'clocx. The following bills were produced ;, to authorize Jane Burton to enclose a j f wr piece of road in Mmsboro Ud., ; to vacate a road in Little Creek^ lid., ; to transfer the the lauds of Sarn'l Kenney in Sussex for and T. No. of up to county ; to amend sec. 86 chap. 125 of the Revised Statutes. The following bills were read a second time : to c onsolidate diats. 27 and 122 Misses co.; for carrying deadly weapons ; in reference to recording deeds and mor^ g-ges; to consolidate diets. .Sussex ; to exempt certaiu property from execution process. The f »Ilowiug bills were parsed : live stock act for dist. No. 122 Sussex county ; to authorize A. G. Philips to place two gates across a road in Sussex county. The committee on Revised Salut- s re ported favorably upon the bill to remove the New Castle county Court House to Wilmington with amendment, making to be appropriated $70,000, and authorizing the W ilmington City Council to donate ground for purposes of building. The McWhorter, adopted. Mr. McWhorter then moved that the bill be parsed w hich motion w as seconded by Mr. Sba'pley. Senator McWhorter said that he real ized the importance of the measure, and it was for the members of the General Assembly to hear both sides carefully.— Upon this particular subject he had put himself at great pains to find out how the people stood. Many of his constitu ents were opposed to a change, but the majority of the people of New Castle county were iu favor of a removal. The main objection raised to the bill is a question of dollars and cents, amount of assessable propeity in the county is over $40,600,000, and the amount asked is $70,000, which at 5 per cent, is only a fraction of a cent on a dollar. There could not be a more fa vorable time for the erection of new county buildings, for labor and material Some say, let us 56 and 152 the ers' wa* the and flee ties, ing ere on motion of Mr. endments N ■ the cd. of and lower. were nev wait until there are sufficient funds in the couuty treasury—but such a state of ill never be. The principle thing to be raised in its favor is that the people want a division of the county, and this will be the opening wedge. Wilmington just representation and she should bave the Court-house, and in the lower county thus formed the Court house should be more centrally located. Senator Bharpley said that whenever a movement of impôt lance was raised it was sure to meet with opposition. The members from Kein and Sussex county could not realize the amount of trouble to which the people of New Castle coun ty were put by having their Court-house so unfavorably located. The Court houses in Kent and Sussex are in the centre of the counties and in the busi iiitres. The Court-house of New Castle county is only convenient and available to one-fifth of the people, and four-fifths of the business that is done at New Castle Couil-house comes from Wilmington and the upper hundreds. In the business of summoning witnesses, «fcc., there will be a saving of from $ 2,000 to $:>,-■»( X» every year. The pre-eut Court house is id-ventilated and too small, and if the new county buildings are not erect ed, then the old build ng will have to be repaired at considerable expense. I hope the members of Kent and Sussex will grant the New Castle members the same courtesy in the matter that we would give them under similar circumstances. already allai rs Senator Coocb said the bill, i had been said, important. He in favor of the removal, but was not ready to say whether be wa* readv to vote or not. The people were overbur dened with taxation and the ire not paid up. He therefore moved a postponement till next Thursday. •Senator McWhorter opposed the mo tion for postponement and said that the subject wa* thorougly eanvj postponement would taxes >1 a ly increase the oppori ion of the Minority. He left the St. Nicholas with that expressed intention aud the day passed without his return. Another day dawned and still another, and yet noth ing was heard of the missing groom. A «•'arch was finally instituted, when it was discovered that the pretended no hleuian had taken passage in an Euro pean steamer from Philadelphia and then the well-nigh distracted bride learned for the first time that she had been duped by a miserable scoundrel.
