D THIRD EDITION G For th* Middle Atlentio State,, fait weather, »outberlj wind», eutleoaiy, followed bj falUBg barometer, .talloner, at Ut bet A Maw Eystans My Which Time la From tba London Times, August 1. Tba system consists of central works, at which tba air Is compressed by means of steam engines working air compres sors, and stored in reservoirs at pressure varying from fifteen to forty-five pounds par square itch. Tbe air thus com pressed and stored is led to distributing receivers, passing on its way to escb through a pressure regulator by means of wblcb a periodical transfer or dis charge of compressed air from tbe reser voir Into tbe receivers takes place, re placing the air which is discharged every minute from the receiver to tbe clocks. By means of the regulator tba com pressed air in the receivers Is maintained at a constant pressure, at which pressure it is delivered to a main or normal clock, by which the system of pneumatic docks Is actuated and controlled. This nonnal clock is an instrument of great K osloo, and is fitted with an equili db or balanced »Ilde valve, which is successively opened and shut by tbe ac tion of the clock, which is self-winding. Tbe compressed sir is admitted to this clock m a continuous current ; but, by means of mechanism, it is trsnsmitted through small branch tubes to tbe re ceiving time-keepers in pulsations. Tbe hands ot the main clock travel In the same manner as those of an ordinary dock. Tho intermittent current of air cm reaching tba receiving clocks, which bowses, acts upon th*lr mechanism, transmitting the lime to one and all of them at the same are those In the streets InetaoL These clocks are made as aim simple as possible as possible, having ordinary minute wheel and a wheel sixty teeth, controlled by a catch fixed on a lever which receives Its motion from a leather bellows. Another catch pre vent* tbe wheel returning upon iuelf when ence It has been moved one to Ab: Tbe pressure conveyed through tbe sys tem of pipes every minute from the main dock causes tbe bellows of each receiv ing clock to expand, thus advancing tbe wheel one tooth, and the minute-hand throngh a one-minute space. Tbe main air pipes, which are laid in the sewers, are only about an inch in diameter, and these are tapped at inter vals to meet tbe requirements of tbe customers. From tbe mains the air is led through branch pipes about a quarter of an inch in diameter in the buildings, and distributed to tbe clocks In the various apartments by means of pipes one eighth inch In diameter, docks are supplied by tbe Company, a •mall annual charge being made for their use. Tbe air can be shut off at *oy time from a hocse by means of a cock which is placed on the service pipe *t its junction with tbe main pipe. Leakages in the pipes have enee upon tbs general working of u>e system, wbiob bee been broognt to great perfection by tbe Compagnie Generale dee Horloges Pneumatiques. The whole matter, la fact, appears to be so simple. Its action so certain, aDd iu cost to the t ubllo to moderate that, other things elng equal, we look for its adoption in our midst at no distant period. an of The influ; tfPKClAL NOTICE. A CARD.
