Jacksonville, Fit., June ft.—Being de* tilted Itoro to-day, 1 avail myself of this opportunity of redeeming the pro mise I made on leaving Kansas City;iLis I do the more willingly as it bas occurred to me that some of my friends in the city and vicinity may possibly be pleased to bear from me in reference to the attrac tions of this .State and especially the great fruit and vegetable interest that's now eliciting so much attention. THE CLIMATE. I conceive a great misapprehension exists in the minds of most persons, es pecially iu the north and west upou this point, the average impression being that during the summer the heat is very op pressive and prostrating. The truth is, this is certainly the best climate iu the United ätates aud probably as good as any In the world. From sun up to 9 a. m., the beat is most setisibly felt; about this time a cool in vigorating breeze commences from the Atlantic ocean on the east aud continues till night, when the gulf wind from the southwest gently and softly cools the atmosphere and fans you to sweet repose, aud you wake up early in the morning much refreshed, having had a splendid night's sleep un der one or two blankets. The average temperature during the summer is 78; iu Lite wiuter 00, the latter being similar to the month of May with us, the most de lightful in the year. It is very obvious that in a climate like this the require ments in the way of fuel, clothing, houses, and l may add food loo, are much less than in a country ice bound during the winter; aud the luxury of being able to stir around comfort a ly in the open air goes far to compensate for the inconve nience of living in comparatively a new country. HEALTH IN FLORIDA. Much might be said truthfully in lav of thia .Stale upon this subject, if space permitted, but will only observe that for pulmonary, bronchial, laryngial, catarrii, neuralgia affections, and many other ills and aches incident to advauccd age and delicate constitutions, this mild, soft climate canuot be otherwise than salutary; and, I believe, the last medical convention ol this Stale claimed that statistics proved it to be the health!«« State in the union. So far as 1 have been able to deter mine, I must say that I do not think that this State is woll adapted to gen eral agriculture, owing to the fact that the soil is generally thin, light and Bandy, and even when fertilized is easily exhausted. Usually near the river and lakes there is a grayish or dark sandy loam underlaid with marl, and grows these crops to which it is suited with wonderful luxuriance, but this ha mock laud, as it is called, is not to be compared to our Missouri soil in durability. It is well adapted to the growlh of sugar cane, long staple cot ton, corn, rice, potatoes, and especial ly to the profitable raising of early vegetables, while the undulating, white sandy, pioey-wooded uplands te be more desirable for oranges, emons, guavas, figs and other tropical fruits. llie soil evidently needs more care and fertilizers than the rich allu vial lands of the northwest, but it is claimed that it repays with ten months' growth more profitable re turns. M ! 1 PLANTING EARLY VEGETABLES AND FRUITS. Tbe business tbat is now engrossing tbe attention of so many here, aud bids fair to eclipse and revolutionize tbe other industries is tbe planting and cultivating of fruits and early vegcta~ tables, and when wo take into consid eration tbe profits accruing trom these pursuits tbe great interest manifested need exoite uo surprise. Orange trees are set out in rows usually from twen ty five to thirty feet apart eash way, and when budded commence bearing in four years, seedlingB in from seven to ten years. They require light cul tivation two or three times a year, either with the hoe, barrow or small turning plow, drawn by one horse or mule. To fertilize it is customary to raise several crops ot corn and peas each year, aud plow under tbe vines, wliicb bave an influence similar to our clover. Tbe rich hammock lauds need no fertilizing to grow tbe oranges or lemons, but man? persons raise vegetables between the trees uutll they commence bearing, in this case it becomes necessary to commercial fertilizers. In ibis way by close attention, Intelligence and indus try, which every business requires, there may be realized from each acre in vege tables from $100 to $400 per year. When tbe orange tree is of full bearing age and well cared for each year's cri p is worth about $1,000 per acre, about equal to flfty acres of wheat. I bave beard of some groves exceeding this for instauce, the Spurs grove near Lane Munroe, of four and one half acres yielded a few years since, as 1 am informed $7,500,aud Col. Hart's fine grove of about seven acres, near Paiatka, yields au annual in come of from ten to twelve thousand—a nice income. Uncleaned lands are worth from $2 to $30 an acre, according to quality aud proximity to towns and transportation, and those that are desir able are beiug rapidly rapidly taken up, as there is an immense Influx of popula lion and capital, especially of our north ern friends, who usually have tbe facul ty of "putting their money where it a ill do tbe most good." Budded trees cost from $25 to $100 per 100. To clean the grounds costs from $10 to $20 per acre ; and fencing from $5 to $10 per sere. An orange grove of full bearing age, and in a fancy location, and having a good water protection, which some think important, sells for $2,00 or $3,000 per acre, and good interest on the money invested. 1 have endeavored to give the Impor tant facls truthfully. Want of exper ience and limited observation may bave led me into inaccuracies. 1 have uo hesitation in saying 1 believe that au in telligent, industrious and patient man may in ten or twelve years, In Florida, make, with almost a certainty, a fortune of from $50,000 to $100,000. This ap peals incredible, but I think it is true and kuow it bai been done. I would like to speak ol tbe people, whom I found intelligent, frank, gener aud very hospitable, and much more enterprising tbau I expected, but time forbids. Uaviug traversed eight great States since leaving borne, aud being delighted as I am with the apparent prosperity and fair prospects of each of them, I have come to the conclusion that are good for purposes for which they were designed ; and other conclu sions would be a reflection upon the goodness and wisdom of our benefi cent. Creator, but iu the great galaxy of States which make up the might Ameri can Union, there is but one Florida.— A. B. Spruill in Kansas City Times. NOTICE.—Dr. Kline's Great Nerve Restorer is the marvel of the age for all Nerve Diseases. All fits stopped free. 8end to »31 Arab Btreet Philf ^islphia, ofit 20-1 v yields a at this pri ▲ Caro for Hydrophobia. Dr. Buisson, of Paris, announces cure for that terrible disease known hydrophobia, tie states that while suf fering with the disease he took a vapor bath 'with the intention not of healing, but of suffocating himself. The bath was at a height of 52 degrees centigrade, equal to 128| Fahrenheit, was raised to 67 centigrade, equal to 132 Fahrenheit, then to 03 centigrade, equal to 142 Fahrenheit, when all the symptoms of the disease disappeared as if by enchant ment, and be Las felt none of them since. More than eighty persons, be claims, have been treated by this pro cess, all of whom be saved. When a person is bitten by a mad dog, be says he should be made to take seven of the so-called Russian vapor-baths, from 57 degrees to 03 degrees centigrade hot, one every day, by way of preven tion. In case of the malady having dis tinctly shown itself the vapor-bath should be heated rapidly to 37 degrees centigrade, and then slowly to 03 de grees. The patient should strictly con fine himself to his room until be is quite well. Dr. Buisson says a man in Amer ica was biilen by a rattle-snake, about sixteen miles from home. Wishing to die in the bosom of his family, he ran borne, went to bed, perspired plentifully, aud the wound healed like auy simple sore. The bite of the tarantula is cured by dancing, the virus beiug dissipated by perspiration. If an infant who has beun yaccinaled is made to take a vapor bath the vaccination is of uo effect. When Itself lu the human system, all measures hitherto adopted would appear unavail ing to arrest its course. It would be quite useless to mention the almost numberless specifics which have been .proposed for the diseases and have been employed without success from time im memorial. There are precautions, how ever which, if adopted reception of the poison, will assure the safety of the injuied party. These pre cautions consist in the application of a ligature, if possible, to impede thecircu lalion from (he wound, iu sucking the wound, and in its thorough cauteriza tion, nitrate of silver being Lite most valuable agent. But if this last is uot available, the hot iron, a burning coal, potassa fusa, or almost auy acid may be used. Mr. Youalt, the very best possi ble authority on this subject, testified in 1830, bef >re a committee of the British House of Commons, that he had beeD s ocesstul In arresting the inoculation of the virus by meaus of cauterization with nilra.e of silver in some 400 human cases and in innumerable dogs; in his own person, moreover, as he had been very frequently wounded by rapid dogs, and . nee severely bp a a ad cat. Very strong men are not so common in these degenerate days as they were in ''the good old Limes," if tbe feats of heroes cbronioied in legendary lore were ever really performed by those mighty ones of tbe past. But Milo,of Crutona, or ev n the Berni-divine Her cules himself, might have been proud of such muscular power as that pos sessed by Xavier Semmelmann, a Ba varian drayman now living in tbe town of Irlbauh, near Straubing. Among tbe latest recorded feats of this formid able athlete, who claims to be the champion weight-lifter'of Germany, the following deserve especial mention as having completely thrown into tbe shade the justly celebrated feats of HansSteyuer himself, hitherto reputed tobe ihe strongest of the latter-day leu tons. A few d ays ago, at Hogel dorf, a suburb of Roitenburg,Semmel mann raised a blacksmith's anvil, weighing weighing 400 pounds, twelve inches from tbe ground with one ÛBger, and subsequently lifted a load of briok, 640 pounds in weight, to the height of bis shoulder. Last year, yielding to tbe solicitations ot his family, who urged him to turn his ex traordinary strength to account by exhibiting it in public, Semmelman commenced a starring exhibition tour in Bavaria. During bis first perform ance in Ingalstad, some dextrous thieves succeeded in robbing him of all bis personal property, and this unto ward mishap traveling tbat be rsolved never again to quit his native district.
