The first live gourami ever received id the United States arrived at New York Friday from France. Au officer of the Amérique bad two fish in charge, but the female died on the voyage. The fact, however, that one fish has arrived in safety proves quite conclusively that gourami can stand, at least in summer, ocean carriage. It is believed ibis fish would flourish in the streams of Florida and Louisiana. There has probably been some ex agger allons as to the size of the gourami, which is reported to have been found weighing 110 pounds. In the Islaud of Bourbon they have been caught weighing Horn 22 to 35 pounds, but this large size aeerns exceptional. The flesh is considered excellent, and is of a yel low straw color. Its growth is' fairly rapid under advantageous circumet ances, and in the third year it attains the tize of a foot. It is omnivorous, taking flesh and vegetables, and been railed by the French colonists the porc des rfoferea, or water pig. Oue peculiarity of the gourami is that It builds a nest of weeds, iu which It de posit* its eggs, from 800 to 1,000, and it cares for the young fish. This fact of philoprogeuillveuess would probably aid very much in rearing the gourami iu our warmer southern waters. Ibis occouul bas Tbe Hl. Leger Race. A dispatch to the New York Herald from Doucaster, England, says : "On arriving at the course 1 found the pie gathered in groups discussing quota's viotory Wednesday which was well received by everybody. Even the bookmakers, who have lost enormous sums iu the race, participated in the general enthusiasm. When they as semble, however, at Tattersall's on Monday to settle their accounts they will look rather black. One speculator aloue lost over $100,000. This was in addition to a large amount won at the Derby, and Mr. Walton is well paid for journeying from New York to see Mr. Lorillard's horse run. The oolt is now backed 14 to 1 for tbe Cesarewitcb, which will be run at Neamarket in tbe middle of October. Altogether Iroquois lias won this year in slakes alone £16,130. o I o A TEN CENT St IT. Justice Scott of this town had before him a most remai kable case last week, it was a suit to recover ten cents, aud was brought by Jobu B. Mayer age in t W. Mrs. Meyer handed the ticket agent fifty cents and received in return two tickets, but She iDsisted that a mistake had been made. Neither theageut tor would give her a respectful heating. Justice Bcoli remonstrated with the without efleC. Then be began and lu d time Mr. Showman yielded. An attach ment in £lhe hands of Deputy-Shenf Logan was not what he anticipated, nor did he dream, perhaps, when he was trying to cheat Mrs. Meyer out of 10 conte, that it would cost him just $2.00. Manufacturers are respon sible for a good deal of the common cheating in blankets. Cotton gets into almost all the low-priced blankets, with out getting into the tickets. They are sold for all-wool by the makers, and few mer chants know the fact. A little cotton can be hidden in a woolen blanket, and a good profit hidden with it. If find a fibre of cotton in our $5 woolen blanket come and tell us.
