Mr. Icptfon fa« f ibaenh ffbm hM »tore durlftg the r afternoon, shortly alter 6 o'clock discovered his loss. The door of the »tore waa locked while he waa away, and hla wife and daughter were at work in tha baaement of the houae. Mrs. and hia return warn Bcrafton went Into the storeroom about 4 o'clock and looked oat of tbe window, seeing three men standing by the poet at the curb. When Bcrafton returned he informed hM wife of the loss, and a hurried search of the neighbor hood waa made. I Mr» Bcrafton weut to the City Hall and Informed the pslice, and the locality was searched by the öcraflou family in vain for the three, to them, strangers. A young man working on the ruin» of Piereou'» burned saw mill opposite ßcrafton's, told Mrs. ßcrafton that one of tbe two men waa "Slim Jim," and that he had seen hlm aud the others talking to some girls at tbe eating house next to the Delaware foundry, during tbe afternoon aud about the time the rob bery Is supposed to bave been committed. Mrs. ßcrafton told her husband as best she could what the men looked like, one being tall, with what she thought was a blue suit, and another a thick set fellow, all three Very well dressed. tfr. ßcrafton went to the depot at the sug gestion for the until three o'clock this morning, and not seeing any police ofH-.er returned home. Bbortly before 11 o'clock last night, Mrs. Bcralton looked from her second-story window and saw three police officers and two civilians standing at the opposite debating as to where the Bcralton 's li of of the police to be on the lookout three men; but after remaining there corner lived. They then crossed tt e street and went to the eating house where the three suspicious characters were seen ln the afternoon. From thence they came to ßcrafton's stoie and kuocklng were admitted to the little salesroom, Mrs. ßcrafton aud her daughter both coming dowu stairs. 'On lighting the lamps the parties were found to be Chief Hawkins, two officers, a man introduced as ''Mr. Reynolds'' "gentJeman" known as (> S)im Jim." n Mrs. ßcrafton was asked to Identify the men, particularly "Jim," who was dressed in a greenish suit and ca/ried a lieht over coat over his arm. "Jiin" told the woman that hie suit was green had told her husband. ard a und not blue ae she Mrs. Bcrafton would Lot swear to the man's identity, but »he fully believed be was in front of her store at the time stated. As to Reynold», who showed a scarred face, and asked if she remembered that, she could sa Chief a y nothing. Hawkins wa» |x>sltivc that Jim " had not been in town during tbe af / ternoon, as he had telegraphed to Philadel phia hfinself and found Uiat Jim had not left that city until 6 o'clock ln the evening. The party remained in the »tore about half an hour, and both Mrs. ßcrafton and her daughter declare that the Chief and his " special« " wa» more anxious to prove the innocence of Reynolds and "Jim" than those worthies were themselves. The women were then told, when they de clared it was impossible to recognize any one by the uncertain light of the lamps, that If they came to the City Hall this morning at 9 o'clock with the young man he saw "Slim Jim" during tlie afternoon they would be given another chance to identify both him aud Reynolds. The Chid said the men would be held until then, but Mias Scraftou intimated as much that she didn't believe them. The officers also stated that they had been to a beer saloon ne suspicious characters were seen to enter during the afteruoou, but the proprietor said that neither Reynolds nor "Jim" were lu that party. Mrs. Bcrafton DO hui»! by, where the three did not ap|)car at tlie hall this morning, neither did Mr. " Slim Jim '' Mr. Reynolds. The women state that Mr. Scraftou was refused a warrant by the Chief^but u|»on what grounds they knew not. They are very indignant over the whole matter and freely declare they have not been treated fairly by the police. Why Reynolds was brought to them to Identify they knew not, nothing to warrant his arrest. ration could not be found and his version of the affair could not be obtained except through his wile and daughter. Chief Hawking in all the material points, corroborates the women and declares that he is positive, from "Information received," that "Slim Jim" .was not in town at the time of the robbery, although he would not Inform they bad said Mr. reporter what that information was.
