In the tropical climat* tlie Felt was found to be a remarkably cool and comfortable fubstunco to lie upon. It was non-abaorbent of molature, either from the body or damp atmosphere, and remained aweet aud pure, and free from the slightest objectionable ocb>r under all conditions of at mosphere. "THE MATTRESSES AND PILLOWS were also found to be free from vermin of all klr^a, at all time®. In one room whore there waa a hair Mattress in use, Ae Officer occupying It was troubled with bug vermin, despite all efforts to prevent the annoyance, but llie Felt In every Instance remained proo! agalnat the peat». " As regards the flotation qualities of the "Felt," I would make the following report ol the teet made by me. A sample or "modal" Mattress, one foot long, tcu inches wide, and five Inches thick, weighing one and one-half pounds iu the aggregate, was used, ticking at oue end was cut away to permit the water to make its way in between the sheet« ol the Felt, if po&slble. A chain shackle, weighing twenty-five pounds, was made fast to the model, which was then placed in the water. At the end of twenty-four consecutive hours, the upper side of the model was still above the surface of the water ; upon being taken from the water and^examined, the model was found to wti{b four and one*hal/ pounds gross weight, the greater part of which weigl t being caused by the water which the ticking had absorbed. The water had penetrated the "Felt" only about ona-elghth Ol») of uu Inch. " I woqjd raooii men i the PATENT ELASTIC FELT MATTRESSES and PILLOWS for the use of Officer» of the Navy. My opinion is that the Felt is the most cleanly, com* for tabic and durable substance for the purposes to which it i® put, ever tried in tho Naw, and it 1« a mont efficient Life Preserving materia! as well. All the officers of the ship using these Mattresses concur with mo in thl* opinion, an 1 I stronrly recommend the iuc of these Mattre*®*» ond Pillows by the Bureau.
