On Its Good Behavior* It ta evident that the Republican majority of the present Congress, admonished by the severe castigation administered by the people, ia on its good behavior, aud dis i>o«ed to deal only in respectable aud honest législation during the remainder of the ses sion In this laudable resolve, wc hope the Re publican members will receive the hearty aid and co-operation of the Democratic minority. To oppose good legislation simply because it originates from Republican sources would be almost inconceivable folly, and as the Democrats in Congress, as against the Re publicans, arc powerless to effect legislation of any kind, the best thing they can dois to freely support every just and righteous measure offered from the Republican side. It need not be feared that any amount of beneficial legislation will reinstate the Re publican party in the confidence- of the people. The rebuke so tiguallv atlminis tered on the seventh of November wae in tended <t only for the Stalwart adminis tration, the Mahone-ruled Senate and thedis graced House of Representatives, but for the whole Republican party, ns managed and controlled during the last campaign, fcuddeu spasm of virtue at this hour will not A calm the outraged feelings of the public, ami whatever amouut of good legislat ion is accornpliahed this session will only bo re ger led, as far as the Republican party is concerned, as penance for the outrögeous «ins committed in the past. PULPIT POL1TICH. A Colored Preacher Disturbs Hla Con fregation'1 Feaee of Mtodi Episcopal rgetown Just now 1» badly torn up over a difficulty between the pastor, Rev. C. J. Long, who is well known in Wilming ton, And the con g rogation. The matter has been going on for some time—ever since the last State campaign, in fact—and It has cul minated in some very remarkable carry ings on. During the canvass the Rev. lx>ng held his own views in State questions, and had an opinion which be took occasion to ex press about the leaders of the Republican party. He was what might be called an in dependent Republican, aud as there is no* many of that class iu his parish be soon got into disputes and difficulties. This went on until a meeting was called, and the pastor was denounced and called to an accouut. Recently he published a circular delending his course on political questions, in which he took his own part rather ably and spoke in plain, but honest terms. On more than one occasion of late, when the Rev. Long would mount the pulpit on Sunday morn ings, his whole congregation would rise from their seats aud exclaiming, "We don't want any Democratic preaching here," would go out of the church, leaving him to deliver his sermon to empty benches. This he hat- always done since the congregation has Ik en in the habit of going out, and he intends to keep will not he driven away from his charge. HF.AI < i u The. African Methodist In Gao at it.
