Fns Material* for Nblpa. We have received from the American cl ion is/ a proof slip of an article on free I materials for American ship», which is an noBnced to appear in that journal next äab urdav. The larger part of the article ia devoted to a consideration of delusion of "The more closely we "examine this question," says the author of thb article who subscribes himself A Prac tical Shipwright, "the clearer will be the " conviction that free materials would be of " no akl whatever to the .shipbuilder, and " that the proposition for their introduction "as a remedy for our present maratime prus "traliou i* neither a sound nor honest propo sition." Now by the aid of a tolerably close examination of the subject, the very reverse of that conclusion is the one we have arrived at, and it is apparent through out the article we are considering that the author bus studiously avoided any refer ence to one obvious and inevitable result of free materials which could not fail, in our opinion, to secure to our shipbuilders ad va! tages that would render competition with the Clyde or other European builders a question simply of comparative skill and enterpn&e, upon which basis no one, we presume, will doubt that our builders would be amply able to take care of them selves. For instance, it is claimed in this article that " there is only " one market to which the American ship " builder could go for his materials and " that is the Clyde, 3,500 miles away." It may be true that at present ship material may be purchased iu the Clyde market at such an advantage over the price of American products that the 3,.500 miles of freightage would still leave it the cheaper of the two, but that, instead of being an argument in favor of continuing the tarilf on imports, should be a very good le&smi for taking it ofl. Necessity, gays a trite old proverb, is the mother of invention, and we have suilklent faith in the intelligence, skill and enterprise of American workmen to believe that when they are brought iu direct compc tiou with foreign production they will more than "hold their own," and do it without bstng brought to the level of that shadowy bugaboo of protectionists—the pauper labor of Europe. In whatever department of production Americans have found them selves compelled to grapple with foreigners they have never failed to sret the better of the struggle. With its natural resources, the energy and enterprise of Its capitalists and the intelligence and skill of its workmen this country afford to meet any other country on the globe at evens, aud it in simply pleading the baby act to say that it is ueceeeary to be protected from foreign ers by the imposition of heavy taxes upon imports. There was a time in the his tory of the United States when a protective tariff was essential to the development ol the manufacturing interests of the country, but that day, happily, is past, and it is longer necessary to burden the consumer with onerous taxes for the 1 beneflt of capitalists who have grown j rich at. his expense. Instead of the Clyde, I 3,500 miles away being the only market I open to American shipbuilders in the event | of the establishment of freu materials, they will have right at their doors, us it were, use of the richest market» of whet It atyle» "Ireo material*." " the to the world. The question of cheap production will be speedily settled wheu it becomes one of practice instead of theory ami it will be settled w ithout detriment to the interests of American workmen or American factures. The resources and pursuits of the United States are too diversified, the opportunities too other wards there is two much -'elbow "room" here to make it lisible to oppress th*» manu erous, in orkingman to buch an extent tectioniaU delight in picturing au the result of a tariff for revenue only. prO American workingmeu act directly against their own Intercuts wheu they vote In support of a protective tariff. We shall this question further in days with respect to its consider a few bearing upon the interests of the workingman, and we believe that wc will he able to show that absolute free trade would be better for him than our present system of tariff. The Daily Ditgraee, printed at Third and King streets, besides being the only news paper in Wilmington which lives by filch ing the work of other people's brains, is enterprising to a noticeable degree. Two or three days makes no difference to it, aDd it daily insults its readers with a rehash of old facts that have been published days be fore by journals who were foolish enough to pay for the news. A specimen brick of how nicely the mechanical Scott and the "hired 1" Solomon work their two depart ments together is shown in yesterday'6 re print of old exchanges. An editorial upon Air Talley's remarks states that the latter "appear in another column." They were not to be found in the first, although, by accident solely, they found their way into th; third edition,no doubt much to the satis faction of the one alleged journal. lîllinn reader# of the Ha Papar aa Maaday. la aeeordanea with prevallln* c in tom, •ad ta order to gfva the employe« of tha Gkxrrri •» opportaoity to appropriately enjoy the Chrietmaa featlritle*, no paper will be leened Iront thla office on Monday. Open till Closed on Monday all Christmas. ten, day Austrian bent-wood furniture at the Centennial was one of the most successful exhibits of that memorable show, exhibitors sold it beyond all dreaming. But the trade stopped right there. The prices were enormous ; and nothing could lie done, with out the lure of the furniture itself to be seen, felt of, tested. There isn't another article in all merchandise more winning or more satisfying. It has the lightness and yielding grace of rattan-work, with a strength beyond any other sort of furni ture ; and the finish is so far beyond anything known in American work, that it may well be incredible. The wood apjicars to be Beech. [We do not certainly know.] The wood is first steamed till it is soft and limp; then bent into a thousand shapes ; then glued, when gluing is required, and piled out to season again ; then smoothed and polished and caned and put together 'with splendid obedience to the laws of strength—put together with iron screw-bolts ; then taken apart, packed down and shipped hither. We have not more than 150 pieces; and it will be weeks before we can get more. Every piece will go to-day, if the right people read this ; for the prices are as reasonable as they were unreasonable six years ago. Who will buy such ? Almost everybody that sees it. No house is too rich for it ; and even the poor will want a little of it now. The lowest price fora chair is $1.7 5; the highest $9.50. The JOHN WAN A MAKER. W« at gallcrv.
