I's Treasurer Traveling Through Taaae Turns Tail—Hearreatesl. Teni 8an Ahtokio, Jan. 9.—Marsh T. Polk, • he absconding Treasurer of Tennessee, wes ceptured yesterday afternoon near Webb Station, 18 mile« from Klo Grande. Tbc capture was made by Olllcrr JoeHheely. The officer la noted lor breaking up stage robbing In West Texas, and tending 17 offenders to the Chester; Illinois Peniten tiary. Polk bad obtained a horse, having left the cars ut Webb Htatlon with a view of retching Mexico at an Isolated point above I.aredo. The officer was aided In maklpg the arrest by a Pullman Palace Car C'on Cook. kins Alter the capture at once telegraphed of TennâMM, mod then ductor Officer Slice 1 Governor Haw placed his prisoner on the train and con veyed him to Laredo where he was put In Jail. The officer, with his prisoner, will arrive In this city at fi o'clock to-morrow (nomine. l'olk was traveling In dlsgulae, but the method of escajm he adopted Is re garded as very stupid, Indicating that he had no knowledge of the telegraphic facili ties of the couutry nor of the character of the border officers. NaShyillk, Jan. 9.—A box has Just come to light, left by Treasurer Polk, be fore he decamped, with the former Trea surer , Dr. William Morrow, which hot and contents he had instructed his ittftmev, John W. Childress, of this city, to take charge of. The box contains various papers, mostly receipt«, drafts and due bills from different persons, for amounts varying from $3 to $28,000, and aggregating about $125,000. They date back ms far as the spring of 1879. Among them are due bills of Charles N. Gibbs, former Secre tary of State, for $1,000. About the same amount in the name of Rufus K. Polk, and smaller amount« from various members of the last Legislature were also found. There are sight drafts on Thomas O'Connor for about f 15,000: also one for $2,000 drawn by a member or the last Legis lature on O'Connor. There are vouchers showing that Polk lu vested twenty-eight odd thousand dollars In a lumber enterprise of D. B. Cooper Sc Co.; also a receipt of D. B. Cooper for $5,000 borrowed money. Other papers In the box give evidence that Polk In vested $33,000 In the sliver mine in Mexico ; $9,000 In Ash ville Gate Company. There Is one receipt lor $8,000 paid to Thomas O'Connor for stock In the Tennessee Coal and Iron Com row. former for $2,500 and $200, and Morrow's checks for $700 and $50, together with numerous other small amounts against various persons. These papers were left in the attorney's hands by Polk for collection for the benefit of certain of his named bondsmen. The Walnut Lumber investment Is first liable lor the balance of purchase money, about $25.000, and the property is probably worth double that. pauy.
