We really did not suppose that the Morn ing Xtvcs desired an answer to ite shallow query with reference to the "professional" attainments and "theoretical training" of Mr. Mclntire in the department of mechan ical engineering. We assumed, of course, that the question was in the morning organ's usual Hue of simply saying some matter what, so long as it covered ence, thiug, white paper aud appeared to reflect upou the character or ability of 6ome Demo But we find that it is-actually ford ing by alone given he sists He ago has crat. serious about the matter and really wants some one to name the college at which Mr. Mclutire received bis diploma as a civil en gineer, aud II that cannot t^e done the as sumption is of course that he is not qualified for the position of Chief Eugiueer of the Water Department. To prove the fallacy of this sort ot argument it is only necessary for one to open his eyes and look around him. The ol this country who have made them selves conspicuous by their success in various walks of life luruish many notable instaures of men who have attained to the very front rank of their calliug without spending a day of their livc6 iu any college or au hour iu securing a "theoretical traiu k " lug." The very best builders iu this city who know little or nothing of theo retical architecture, and those who waut good houses never think ol going to the "theoretical builders'' lor them. Mr. Mc lutire's qualifications lor the position ol Chief'Engineer of the Water Department have been tested by the one sure method that never fails to convince those who have not are to for some ulterior reason Ijr not being convinced —that of a practical aud succebslul service iu the Water Department, an experience that is worth more that) all the "theoretical training" that could be acquired iu auy college of mechanical cngiuecriug. A professional education is a good thing aud be understood as attempting to be little iu value, but where it cannot be com bined with a practical training it is of smull do not wish to account as a means to the successful management of a business which quires the constant personal supervision of a large îount of practical mechanical engineering-, in the conduct of the Water Department. The School Election. Unless some objectiouable candidates are sprung upou the people at the iast moment the voters will have an unusual number of good names to select from at the school elec tion on Saturday afternoon. Tills is a gratifying prospect, and it is equally gratifying to know that partisan politics are not likely to find any place in the election. So little good and much harm are the aver age results of party struggles for positions iu the Board of Education, that it is a rebuff to go to the polls and know that the result is not entirely dependant upon the partisan majority of the ward where the election is held. At no time has it ever been more neces sary for the people to be careful in their selection ol school directors than at present. The yearly expenses of the Board now ap proximate $80,000, and under the provisions so of the new city charter live per cent can be added eaeli year to the appropriation for the previous year, aud the city cannot avoid raising this increase by taxation, it demanded by the Board. At this rate the school expenses of the city will soon reach $100,000 iu a single year, am the people •adily see the necessity of ^electing the very best men to take ebarfi of our im portant school interests and , ^^nd to the disbursement of this money.
