REPAINTED FROM YESTERDAY UK. BHISTOK'N DEFUSE. H® Oftftl®® Oumftlel®!, All Vhftrg** «*» VB elsriosl Conduct. Baltimore, July 31.—Rev. Dr. George R. Bristor, who recently left St. Luke's Metho dist Episcopal Church In Newark under a cloud, charged with immorality, and came to this city to his father's home to-day, eent a letter to the presiding elder of that dis trict In defeusc of his conduct. In his answer to the charges Dr. Bristor claims that the trial was a larce and that he re signed the pastorate ol the church for the following reasoi-H : First, For a year I had been semi-invalid from my lucessant work for 8t. Luke's Church. By this terrible charge I had been completely unnerved and a rest from such a tension was absolutely necessary. Hecond, My disgust and contempt for some of the St. Luke officials, who, on Friday and Saturday, while so loving to me, had been working out these evils for ray hurt, was so stroug that would have fellowship with them no longer. Third, I expected by quietly with drawing to save from scandal the church for which 1 had given my money and toll. Fourth, Add to these the great fact, and which I fully explained to them as if to gen tlemen, thaï 1 wished at auv cost to save from hurtful excitemc.it a sick wife aud an invalid moiher. That I iniBtook them and so erred in doing is patent, for the Associ ated Press was immediately called into fullest use to herald everywhere exciting aud lying statements. For IS mouths I have, as pastor, gone in and out of the houses of the St. Luke's peo ple, have stood with them in their griefs and trials, have helped to carry their burdens. 1 challenge any church to stand forth in the fear of God aud say that they have ever heard one vile word, one vicious sut gestion, oue lewd expression fall from my lips. Were I to say that all of the St. Luke's officials have been equally pure and chaste in expression, then would I indeed be a liar. I challenge any inau or woman among them to truthfully say that ever before them 1 demeaned myself vile in thought or immortal at heart. Could immorality thus have burned within me and not have gleamed forth befoie reliable men and women at some time? Can a life thus lived for eighteen months b* overturned in the minds of all unbiased pebple by the statements of four, or even a dosen, boys, aud they self-con fessed liars? Did my ambition so aspire, 1 could readily have to-day more substantial proofs than letters of the sympathy, love aud confidence of many members t»f St. Luke's i hurch. One of the officials is pub lished as admitting that had I chosen to re main lti Newark 1 could have made a rup ture or schism in St. Luke s. no such result, up, never to disintegrate, the Church of Christ. Just l or woman in that But l crave My effort must be to build hat ray further course shall be I shall uot declare to you. I shall not cease to serve God—my disgust is uot with reli gion, but with'some types of it 1 have met. I shall, by God's help, manifest by my life that these scandals signing persecutors. My future course will at least bring & contempt among all honor able people for those officials who, f'udas Ilk»*, kiss while they betray, and for their associates whose docility allows them to be made tools of; together with an increased pity iu the general Church for y oui self, so utterly lacking the courage and principle seeing common justice the preachers, w ho by church usage are, un fortunately committed to your care. r, sir, 1 leave this phase of this most sad affair. I cannot easily be drawn into any mere newspaper wrangle, for that would be bootless. May God pity your tm be -.ility and cowardice; pity the hypocrisy aud docility, the scheming and lying ol those who have taken part in this matter; and pity me, smitten and crushed uuder but the Hcs ol de doue to n®edful lor And such a false, unjust aud unholy charge. 1 , sir Georoe R.
