An article appenr** in s late edition of the Republican of Saturday which did Clerk Penington a wrong und at the same time showed that the Republican reporter is in the habit of getting information from Chief Hawkins, with reference to cases and the actions of the police, more readily than Clerk Penington. The facts in the matter as understood by the conversation that occured this morniug, after the regular Municipal Court are as fol lows: On Saturday Officer McGee had a prisoner in the cells who was to be tried at 9 o'clock. When the Are broke out at 829 Kirkwood street, McGee left the hall tor that place ahortly before 9 o'clock Clerk Peuington asked the chief if there w which he replied that there was noue, from the fact that. Officer McGee was at the fire, consequently the man could not be tried. Clerk Peuington returned to the court room and staled to the reporters that »h were uo cases. About this time Officer Tibbitt, applied to Judge Cummins for a warrant, and while the officer was stating to to the Judge the ground upon which be asked for the warrant, Officer VcGee re turned and his prisoner wat brought iu ami given a hearing. Cases of this kiud have occurred before, but never from a desire to with hold from the public any matter of a public nature, warrant, which officer Tibbitt wished to pro Is held by Judge Cummins, under ad visemeut, who stated this morning that he wished to look into thu matter from the fact that the man most aggrieved, Chiel Hawkins, stated that he did not wish a warrant, and that the officer whonow wished to procure the warrant should have arrested when the offence wa« committed, as the officer was present and had the au thority. any cases U» 1 T1 « I be A HORRIBLE ï KAOEDY. Frank Hutchinson, arrivi d here ace panted by his professed wife. Hutchinson was a gambler. The womau obtained cm ploy ment at the Tivoli Theatre as a waite girl*. Everything went on smoothlv with the pair until a few days ago, when Hutch lnson w»*ut on a prott acted spree, spending all of his own and the girl's money. Early this morning the girl jumped from a seeoud-story window of th»; building, where they roomed. Blood whs streaming from a wound iu her throat. Two polie«* m< passing saw her fall, and while one o' them went to her assistance, the other ran up the stairs uud kicked iu the door of tin room Irom the window of which the woman had jumped. Hutchinson was found stretched on th floor dead, with his throat cut from ear to In bis right band was grasped a razor, from which b ood was dripping. Joseph Glander, about, 18 years of age and employed by the Kennebec JceandCos Company met with an accident which i likely to prove tatal, about 2.15 o'clock this mo'ning. He is employed as a wago helper and shortly after goiug on duty thi? morning he attempted to pass uuder th main shaft of the machinery which volving at the rate of 150 revolutions pe minute. In passing beneath th«: shaft, which is very low, the sleeve of hia shirt was caught by a thumb screw on the collar of the shaft, drawing his a body, which was wt.irled for at least four minutes, at the above raw. ol speed. A workman who happened to be passing around the building saw the body on tin shaft and gave the alarm. The engine was stopped as s«*on as possible when Glandei was taken off the shaft and conveyed to ui? home at 1U00 East. Tenth street.
