RtPHINTID FROM YESTERDAY I* BR COULD RUN A LITTLE. Us or Monday. On Saturday afternoon a darky entered tke establishment of a clothing dealer on Market street between Front and Second and, after talking for a few minutes, gare a tremendous y uaily remarked 100 yards in less time than auy man In the ?he merchant in question thinks he can oatrun anyone for that distance that could kt mentioned, so when the darkey made the MMiark the merchant was not slow to put R»**J that the darkey could not ISO yard race. Preliminaries were soou ar ranged, the darkey have placed the required amount of money In the hand of the rei eree. Owing to business the merchant could not run on Saturday, so the race was arranged for Sunday and took place on the causeway at an early hour. All evening on Saturday the merchant was in the best of spirits at the Idea of win ning $30 so easily aud continually rubbed his hands in a sell-sailsfled manner as much as to say that he had already made arrange ments for the disposal of the money. But alas, be was mistaken in his man, for when the race came off, the darkey, figura tively speaking, walked right away from his oppoueut aud came out far ahead at the end of the end of the race, not only as to dis tance In advance but also $30 ahead, for the referee was impartial aud Immediately tuaued over the stakes to the darkey, who walked off with a smile upon him weighing almost a pound To say that the merchant, who was so badly fooled, is mad, puts it in the mildest language; to get him mad the boys have only to remark that he Is & good foot racer and the trouble begins immedi ately. He vows that he will never race again and that he will grow baldheaded and gray besides before he will ever bet with a strauge darkey. Hugh Sweeney and the Earner who were arrested at Atlantic City on Thursday last, for participating in the tight at tbe Ex cursiou House, during which the Chief ol Police of that place aud another officer were severely beateu, were released last. Saturday The evidence against Swt^eney was not sufficient to implicate him and he was ac coidingly released. Earner was held in the sum of $150 ball for his appearance at May's Lauding at the next st^ssiou of court. Two other Wiltning tonians are still locked up at the Landing on the srme charge and are not likely to- tx released The Chief of Police of the Atlantic City force, is inclined to believe that Earner is innocent of the offence of fighting, but stated in conversation that he thought Earner ex ercised too much authority iu trying to get away with the men who had flrst created the disturbahee at the Excursion House. The injuries sustained by the chief on that numerous bruises about the body besides a very ugly cut back of the left ear, which nearly severed that member from the head. The police of that city are all ready to re ceive any delegation from this city that may maku their appearance at that place, aud are not slow in using the strongest language toward their assailants, who they 6ay made threats of coming back this week Lull day 6ay with the intention of cleauiug the place out. The trial of Earner and the other two will take place on th* second Tuesday in September at Mays Lauding. A man named Laflerty living at the islaud went the bail which ha l been fixed at $150. Tin Chief ot Police denied *.he statement thaï Earner's sou had been arrested. The Puzzle How to keep cool Is very satisfactorily solved by .visiting A. Hauber's saloon, 200 West street.
