R., on the sharp curve juet below Newport, was struck and run over by a special engine, bound for Newark, and terribly maugled. He died almost stautly. The whistle was blown repeatedly, but the man waa so absorbed In watching the freight trgin that he did not hear the warning signals until it was too late.
