j . .-r NiriINTIO FROM V««TIROA» t««*, ».*>, A QUEER CASE. A rumor ni current tht» morning in tbs •utrrn port of thU city that » young wom.u by a crowd of rough. In Seventh *nd Kirkwood had teen overtaken the neighborhood of streets about 11 o'clock last night and car ried into a stable snd outraged. A Gazette reporter, for the purpose of getting at the true facts of the case, visited the locality and learned the following facts : About 10.80 o''lock last night the neighborhood of Seventh and Kîikwood were awakened by loud talking of several men in the stable on Kirkwood between Seventh and Eighth and In which a woman's voice was now and again mingled, at times accusing someone of stealing her money, and again crying out loud aa If in distress. This state of affairs continued for some time when suddenly the woman Increased her cries, at the same time a woman and V in 11. three men came from the atable yard and turned down Kirkwood to Seventh street and disappeared. later another gi came from the yard>gnd walk« steps ot 718 Kirkwood where the girl eat down, still crying In s hysterical manner. The fellow with her tried to persuaded her to keep still and was urging her to be quiet, when Edward Ewing, on whose steps they were, opened the wfpdow snd asked what the matter was. At the first nose made by Mr. Ewing In opening the window the man on the steps ran. Upon coming down stairs the woman found wringing her hands and crying, and In answer to a question, stated that she had been robbed and outraged. A crywd loon gathered around the house. The girl was asked her name and also the number of her house, the first she refused to tell but stated where she lived, and also refused the invitation to stay at Mr. Ewing's bouse all night. Her actions throughout were those of a person either under the In flnence of liquor or suflerlng from a very seveie fright. T. H. Fennimore, who was coming down Eighth street about this time was attracted by the girl's cries and went up to the girl and offered to take her home. At first she refused and acted as if afraid to go with him, but finally, after considerable persua sion, allowed herself to be taken to the bouse where she lives in the capacity of a servant. Mr. Fennimore stated that the girl appeared to be under the influence oi liquor, but that she was able to walk home without, and difficulty. Upon being admitted to her house she said nothing about what had happened but walked around in shortly sfter retired to her room. The girl was visited th.s morning and stated that early last evening she started out with $11 to buy a pair of shoes and some other articles. That she met a female acquaintance on Shipley street below Third anc was jiersuadcd to take a drink with her, a thing that she nevei did before. They went to Barbara Fischer's saloon and alter taking one drink went street and when near were joined by a girl kepi down Third street until met by a halt a dozen men near the railroad. The other girls began cutting up with the and she wanted to g« t away, to do her shop ping and go home. Two men then caught hold of her and told her she should not go home, but to come on with them up to Kirk wood street and they would home after a while. Sh< lor help aud a policeman came up The men told him to go away, that they would tak** care of her, and he did so in spite of her ciy to him for help. The meu then took her up to Kirkwood street, between Seventh and Eighth streets. When they reached a stable yard entrance they stopped and she, on looking an und, that Saille Evans was still with the parly but that the other girl bad left. After stand lng at the entrance of the stable yard lor a few seconds, three of the meu caught hold of her and dragged her inside, took her around behind a barn, threw her down and ou' raged her. 8be trying to scream, but they held their hands over her mouth. They then took her money, and she, in resisting them, got a hand off her mouth and screamed, "Murder!" Her ravisbers then fled with the Evans girl, and she went to Mr. Ewing's house on Kirkwood street. She says that she never saw the men before, and she bad no idea what kind of a girl Sallie Evans was when she went with bei. She describer one oi her assailants as being a tall man with a beard and auother as a little abort man wearing a cap. From those in a position of knowing the truthfulness of the girl it would appear that the girl's statement is -untrue. Her employer stated in conversation with a representative ot the Gazette that under the influence en ce of liquor when she was admitted to the house and staggered to such an extent that, she was compelled to hold on to a chair to prevent her from failli g, aud that when asked to perform a small piece of work she staggered oti to lier room without sajlng anything at all. He further stated that her aciious about the house with young such that would h ad people to believe that she went with the men on Kirkwood street volentarily, but that while iheir she became cmzy drunk and hence her hysterical weeping. rl and a ed 16 the A tow minutes 10 abstracted manner aud down Third Poplar, named Sallie Evans.
