A collision occurred a few minutes before 8 o'clock this morning between two aceom modal Ion trains at the foot of Voplar street, which was caused by a misplaced switch, and which fortunately resulted In uothlug more serious than the mashing of the pilots of both engines. Engine No. 40, George Fredericks engi neer, had just backed in on track No. 3 at the station and had made fast to the ac commodation train which leaves here at 8.15 o'clock. The switch tender at the Front street crossing, by some oversight, forgot to throw the switch back to allow the accommodation train, due here at 7.48 o'clock, to pass on up to the station. The train was drawn by engine No. 27, James Jamison, engiueer, aud was coming in at the rate of about six miles an hour. The switches at this point are all on the curve immediately below Poplar street, and the engineer of No 27 did not notice the fact that he wan on the wrong track uutil withiu 200 yards oi No. 40. To put on the air brakes and reverse the engine was the work of but a moment, but unfortu nately the distance was too short and the two engines came together with force enough to break the pilot -of engine No. 27 to splinters, while that of No. 40 crushed in. As soon as possible the passengers on the outgoing accommodation train wore trans ferred to other cars and departed with but a of the In j.oo», y i oe, 3 io a. loo f046,10 1.07, 13.80, LSI, * t 2.06, * .t few minute» delay, aud tho coming train were pushed to the »tat a shifter. The switch-tender, John O'Neill, in conversation with a representative ol the Gazette, stated that he could reason lor the oversight on his part 8.40, 7.00 14 offer and that when he had closed the switch to leave No. 40 back in, the coming of the other train entirely slipped his mind, lie stated that he had 6lx switches to attend to, two of which are betweeu Front and Lombard streets, while tho other four are betweeu Front and Poplar, a distance apart of about 100 yards, and that he is constantly kept busy between them to allow shifters to woik, at the same time keeping a sharp lookout for through trains. 11.60 6.06, * A SERIOUS CHARGE. the Samuel Deaton Held for Conrt Charge of Aasault With Intent to Kill. The act also provides that the newly named body shall all three be real on Bible for any debts and . squired to def« nd any actions which miiht ex'st against either, and the consequence is, that In the suit now ponding before the Circuit Court of the United States in which Thomas C. Ilarably is plaintiff and the Junction and Breakwater Company de fendant, a scire facias has been issued to bring in as defendant the other two com panies and make them defendants also. This writ was served last week on one of th j officers of the newly-named body, and will, of course, prevent the suit from being tried at the coming term.
